Do you have one yet? Many people seem to be quite taken with Jayne - he is a fun character, but so far I think my favourite is Mal. Good ol' Captain Tight Pants!

I am actually quite surprised because I like all the characters quite a lot - usually when the ensemble is this big there are one or two you just don't care about, and in this case I just don't have that problem.

Ditto.

I voted for Book. He just seems like the most interesting out of the lot. He knows how to fight, got a mysterious past and he has a lot of really cool lines.

I'll make it a race and vote for Wash. Maybe I felt sad for the under-appreciated pilot. But all the characters have interesting sides and bring conflict to the story.

With all due respect to your opinion Shaun, when it comes to fire fights, mysterious past and cool lines, how can you beat River?

It seems clear to me that while Book did have an interesting story to tell, that River was the one driving the BIG story arc, at least for the first season.

And don't forget her occasional flashes of humor.

Since the season is over, spoilers don't seem appropriate any more.

When her plan is the one that beats the bounty hunter -

MAL: Go on, get in there. Give your brother a thrashing for messing up your plan.

RIVER: He takes so much looking after.

And, of course, who can forget...

RIVER: No power in the 'verse can stop me.

I'm convinced that if the show had continued that we would have found that to be a nearly true statement.

EDITED TO ADD ONE MORE POINT:

Would it be reaching to say that River was the Buffy of this series? By that I mean, the young woman who eventually finds within herself the power to overcome her trials... and more.

I liked them all, sadly we may never know what was the plan for all of them. I would have liked to seen more about Kaylee's past, for instance.

That was unsettling almost to the "Bored Now" line in Buffy S6 levels. Very very cool, and I think that you have a point about River's importance to the storyline. I felt that the ongoing revelations regarding River (and to a lesser degree, Simon) were the central part of the storytelling we saw in the aired eps.

I doubt whether Whedon would have intended her to become THE central character, but her journey would likely have continued to be the focus.

Although... Book really fascinates me. We have had hints that there is more to him than simply a cloistered monastic background, and there has been little to give us much idea of what exactly his origins are. I wonder if he was a plant to keep an eye on River? Whatever his story, I would put money on it being intertwined with River's background.

Hey ppl what about Kaylee!?! I mean 'oright she has not these cool lines like mal or wash does but this girl looks so damn hot, i just had to vote for her

and ofcourse becouse no one did that so far. Wash is cool too, specially when he makes fun of jane ("how was your brain able to learn our language?") or just take his first lines of the pilot (serenity)

Yeah, well. This goes back to what I was saying about everyone being really cool.
I love how Kaylee acts with Mal - she is familiar with him like he is a cool uncle or something, doesn't quite treat him with the same respect everyone else seems to.

Wash is also very cool - I think he is kind of this show's Xander (for those of you who watch Buffy.
