Actually, Amanda answered this at her Melbourne con... The shells in an MP5 eject to the side, and she (and others) got their fair share of burns. The P-90 ejects the shells downwards, so it's much safer.

Whilst the above answer is problably a good part of the "why", it has been quoted elsewhere here on ASciFi that the on-site military adviser(s) also suggested the change, to stay in line with "current" US military practice...
