Well, Jay Jay, I agree with Ray Gower about the books. I read The Hobbit after I'd read LotR twice and it makes some of the references in FotR more understandable, like you're being let in on a private joke, but it's not critical. ![]() And ALWAYS ask people near the middle or back of the theater to move over before you settle on the front. I HATE the front row... even in the theaters with stadium seating, it sucks. Gotta make plans to see TTT again... maybe this weekend. I still think I missed stuff.

Thanks pkgrl. I was speaking to my dad about borrowing his books about 30 mins ago. He also gave me 2 Tolkien introductory books, you know, let you know words, characters etc. He's going to look out his books for me and let me 'borrow' them. I also totally agree with you about the pictures, but my sis was having none of it. I was asking about spaces at a nice distance, but off she went, so followed me. Cant wait till it comes out on DVD now. Does anyone know when? J

I don't know, but based on FotR's release, I'd guess August again with an extended version before the holiday season. We've got time... lots of it. Personally, I'm looking forward to see if they make a presence at the comic con again this year. That'll be in July. If I get any news then, I'll post it here... along with any awesome pics I might take. ![]()

Hi, Tim -- why do you characterize the differences as "glaring problems" ? The film holds internal consistency and follows well from the previous film. There is no requirement on Peter Jackson to be "faithful" to the books, much as Tolkien fans may want or expect it. The film must also appeal to those who have never read the books. It must stand on its own, as a film, and as such cannot in every detail follow the text. Also, we don't know what was left on the cutting room floor, although I suspect we'll see some of that on the eventual DVD ![]()

i think that they are glaring problems, mostly cause i was nitpicking, and i know that we have to keep up consistnecy, and make things understandable for the people who didnt read the books i was just saying ![]()

Ah, but keep in mind that one person's nitpick isn't necessarily anyone else's "glaring problem." ![]() A "glaring problem" in TTT is that Pippin is tied up, but his hands are free as the horse rears over him, then later it is explained how his hands were freed. Not sure the sequence works quite right. Or in FOTR when Aragorn throws the apple that hits Pippin in the head, as Pippin leans over to pick up the apple his other hand rises into the frame revealing he is already holding an apple. Elves at Helms Deep may not be in the book, but their arrival, valiant combat, and the moving death of Haldir worked beautifully. Let the film be the film.

| Absolutely let the film be the film... however Quote:
No problem in either case. PJ did an AWESOME job with continuity. Just watching two episodes of Roswell made me realize that the continuity ball is an easy one to drop, but PJ and his crew were amazing in that regards. | |

Upon reflection I think you are probably right and besides neither of those instances really rates as a "glaring problem" -- even to me. Those who have trouble accepting the changes PJ has made in Tolkien's work need to remember that many people who see the movies have never read the books (I know because I live with two of them ) If the movies play well and make sense to those with no prior knowledge of Tolkien or the world of Middle Earth, then PJ has done his job.And of course, this leaves incentive for those who have never read the books to go read them. If PJ had slavishly followed every line of Tolkien, then there would never be any point in reading LOTR again. As it is PJ has given a wonderful feel to LOTR while leaving plenty of room to tell those in need: "Oh, but you need to read the books. There's ever so much more in them than in the films." ![]()

Just seen it, yes I'm late I know I liked some of the additions to the film not in the book. Legolas on the skateboard was great. Didn't mind the Arwen scenes either. No one has commented on Legolas jumping on the horse with Gimli during the attack on the Urak-Hai near the beginning. The man behind me in the cinema shouted "Woah!" and everyone laughed. It was just too unbelievable. My wife has never read the books, only 'The Hobbit', and she found it difficult to follow 'who' was 'where'. Even though it is years since I read them, I guess it did help me to follow it. The films need to be accessible to everyone, not only Tolkien fans, and I think Peter Jackson has done a good job. Fantastic images. Really beautiful cinema.
