A Shadowed Soul

Crimson blood forms pearls
upon an ivory neck
as the brunette sleeps,
more sublime in her own death
than I dreamt was possible.

With my shadowed soul,
could I ever hope to be
as peaceful as she?
LaCroix lurks beyond the door.
I dare not disappoint him.

We vanish like light
extinguished by the darkness.
I take one last look.
Moonlight caresses her face
and reveals my own disgrace.

What chance do I have?
Can a hunter be redeemed
for pursuing prey?
Though I know not the answer,
the question remains thus far.
