7.02: Beneath You

The rumbling of the earth heralds the arrival of a new monster.
And there are rumblings of a terrible evil coming.

Another young woman, in a far-away land, bites the dust and Buffy fears that many more will fall before the source of the evil is revealed.

And we are reminded just how strange relationships can be on top of the Hellmouth.

I only saw the first half of this episode - what I really really couldn't get out of my head was that the red-head we saw at the beginning was very reminiscent of Alias. It obsessed my every thought until I had to go out...

[Tabitha: ...the red-head we saw at the beginning was very reminiscent of Alias.]

You know, I had the exact same thought. I think it was a combination of the hair, the moves and the music. Since in Alias, she spends about a third of the time running from the bad guys with some fast-paced music in the background, I guess the comparison is natural.

On the "Spike's Minions" list - someone compared it to "Run, Lola, Run" -- but anyway --

Only thing I didn't like about this episode - that funky blue shirt they had Spike in --

This was the best episode in a LONG time -- (like, since Tabula Rasa) ---

The fight scene in the Bronze, Spike telling Buffy that he wasn't gonna share b/c they weren't friends anymore, Dawn scaring the s**t out of Spike, "Crazy Spike", and the ultimate - that scene at the end, in the church -- that was incredible!

There was so much in this episode - harkens back to "Intervention" - so much going on that everyone is in on the action and everyone's role is important - yes, even Dawn and her tiny bit - but she's being included - she's 'part of the gang' now too -

Dawn: Should we round up the gang?
Xander: Sure, but, we *are* the gang.

And then she tells Spike that if he hurts Buffy he'll 'wake up on fire' -- eek!

Spike: And when did your sister become unbelievably scary?

Then, that scene just before the fight in the Bronze - about sleeping together -- the look Xander and Spike gave each other - CLASSIC!! (and great for all those X/S slashers out there -- I know there are some) -- it was just too funny!

So - great episode -- if you want a rating - eh - 9.5/10 -- -.5 pts b/c of that ugly shirt ---

Now I don't want to get off on a rant here but...

Well, first on the red-head issue. I think the original reference that the "Alias" people got it from was the movie "Run, Lola Run". I have a theory on the whole girls getting killed scenes. This might have been posted somewhere else but I'll give it a go here anyway.

The girls getting whacked are Slayers in training and the new "Big Bad" is killing 'em off so when it gets Buffy there won't be a new Slayer. Of course there's the whole Slayer line going through Faith now that I haven't sorted out but we'll see.

As for the ep itself, I love the new tone this season. It's real remeniscent of S2&3. Fun and funny but also keeping the dramatic feeling from last season. Love the Xander scenes here. After all these years he still can't get the girl. And what's really going on with Spike? Is this the same reaction that Angel had to having his soul back? Time will tell...

Can't wait for next week! Willow's back and that's gonna be interesting!

I know Angel had problems when he got his soul back, but I don't think he went crazy like how we're seeing Spike --

then again, they didn't delve real far into 'what was Angel like right after he was cursed' in either show - we just got bits and pieces -

but I agree - so far, I'm liking this season MUCH more than last -
it has a 'happier' feel to it - I mean, I understand that ppl go through rough times, but man, S6 was depressing...

[Highlander II: ...(Dawn) tells Spike that if he hurts Buffy he'll 'wake up on fire' -- eek! Spike: And when did your sister become unbelievably scary?]

They are trying hard to reform her character. Perhaps a little too hard. I mean, Spike thinks Dawn is scary??? Come on.

[Highlander II: ...they didn't delve real far into 'what was Angel like right after he was cursed' in either show...]

Yeah, but remember "Becoming"? Angel was still wandering lost and reclusive 100 years after getting his soul back. So everything couldn't have been hugs and puppies.

[Highlander II: I'm liking this season MUCH more than last...]

Yeah, I was thinking today that, except for the Musical, I could do without the entire Sixth Season. Unless they can pull this season out, I even had the thought that perhaps they should have let Buffy die at the end of Season Five. I would have been very disappointed, but it would have been an inspirational and fitting end to the tale of this Slayer.

I hope Joss can change my mind. It would be a shame to see the series go on past it's prime.

Great episode. The story, tone and the characters all fitted in just right. Dawn, Spike and Willow are all better (more interesting) characters now, IMHO. I want more of Giles though.
I had a few small problems with it, firstly Spike's hair change. I liked the old (as in last episode) look. Also where was Xander when Spike attacked Anya. I know that they're not too friendly (X/A) but he still would of protected her... from Spike at any rate.

I'm going to join the crowd and say I'm enjoying this season much, much more than last season. I hope the trend this season continues.

Yeah - Spike thinking Dawn is scary is a bit of a stretch, but, remember, that she did have something of a crush on him (not that he would notice) and she liked him, then she found out that he tried to rape her sister? Gotta say I'd probably be really scary, even to tough ppl, if someone tried to hurt my sister ---

but - yeah - they are 'pushing' her a little too much - square peg/round hole kind of thing -- but she's better than last season -

"Becoming" - oh - you mean when he was in NY? yeah - he was still a bit off - but we don't know what he did btwn 1890 and 198? --

But he wasn't talking to himself (that we could see) -- or talking to someone/thing that wasn't there.

Tho, Spike might have an advantage in that Buffy is there (which is what pulled Angel out of his funk - gee, this song and dance is really familiar) - not that Buffy's gonna want to help Spike after what he did - but the look on her face when he was talking to her in that church (and where the heck did that thing come from anyway?) and he leaned against the crucifix -- she might help him out --- not sure how tho --

Spike appears to know things - 'from beneath you, it devours' - he wasn't talkin' about that worm monster - (don't think the girl in Buffy's dream was either - nice misdirect)

Yeah - I was trying to figure out how Spike had fixed his hair and clothes so fast - where did he get them?

And, is Klem (Clem?) still hangin' in Spike's crypt?

well - where did your tape cut off?

Had they been to the Bronze to talk to Anya??

ummmm -

They go to the Bronze -
Anya can see Spike's soul - he punches her - she says she's gonna kick his ass - Buffy steps in - then she runs off after Nancy who left b/c the Scoobies are freaks.

Buffy has to save Nancy from the big worm monster, Spike shows to beat up the monster, but the monster turns back into Nancy's ex-b-friend and Spike stabs him instead, thus setting off the chip and another round of "Crazy Spike" --

He talks to the air for a minute, and Buffy tells him to shut up, and he tells her 'from beneath you, it devours' then runs off - Buffy jumps up and runs after him.

Anya and Xander come in the alley and X tells her she did the right thing - she tells him things will get worse.

Cut to the cemetary - Buffy walks up to a church - she goes inside and Spike is mumbling something about the disguise not working - he couldn't hide. he tries to open his pants (he's a bit confused about now) - and Buffy tells him to stop, he grabs her throat and she flings him across the room. he lands on several church pews and crashes to the floor. B asks 'Have you completely lost your mind?'
Spike: Well, yes. Where have you been all night.

She tells him that she's listening and she wants to know what happened to him --- he starts talking, but then says he can't w/ her looking - and moves into the shadows. He tells her that he dreamed of killing her, yadda yadda -- then he 'got the spark' - or they put the spark in him -- and he says that "Angel should have warned me" -- and finally Buffy gets it --- he has his soul - and she asks him why / how -- He says "It's what you wanted, right?" and talks more -- something about doing it b/c he wanted to be the kind of man who would do (something that I can't remember off the top of my head - but I think it had to do w/ the attempted rape and hurting her - Buffy) -- then he crosses to and leans against a large wooden crucifix saying 'can we rest now?' and we see the smoke rising from where his bared chest is pressed against the cross and a tear streaks Buffy's check - and just before fade out Spike says 'Buffy, can we rest?'

(basically - I've watched the final scene about a dozen times, so I know it pretty well, it's all the 'lead up' stuff I don't know as well )

Here's some interesting notes from The NY Daily News.

When UPN's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" opened its seventh season with a scene showing a long-haired, brunette Buffy lookalike being hunted down in Istanbul and stabbed to death, I didn't know quite what to think. Then Tuesday's episode, the following week, upped the volume and speed on the techno soundtrack in that show's opening scene, which was set in Frankfurt and showed another Buffy look-alike (played, again, by series star Sarah Michelle Gellar) being chased down and stabbed to death. This time it was explained as a dream or vision of Buffy's - but this time the look-alike was wearing a punk magenta wig, making it an obvious, and hilarious, salute to ABC's "Alias."
