Yeah I did like this one...a good opener I thought

Not really much to add apart from did anyone else think that Dawn is setting up her own scooby gang with the girl from the bathroom and the guy they found in the basement!

I thought you guys would have dissected this beyond all reasoning by now. Thankfully not!

I very very very much enjoyed this first episode of season seven. Back to school has never sounded like such fun phrase. I love that Dawn is a million times more likable than she has been in previous seasons, in fact, did anyone else get the feeling that Dawn was the main character in this episode? I was empathising a lot more with her than with Buffy.

I have been spoilered up a little, so I understand something about the girl running in Istanbul at the beginning, but I did notice the Spike-alike in that doorway. I wonder if this is an accidental coincidence, or something more meaningful?

First jump of season seven - Dawn's classmate stabbing her with a pencil! I amost jumped out of my seat. Buffy's bathroom encounter before that was predictable, and therefore not a shock, but the stabbing bit freaked me out!

Xander has come up in the world a little hasn't he? Gone from being average bloke on the job to big boss type pretty durn quickly. Maybe he is better off without Anya. Although it seems obvious she isn't better off without him, not by a long shot.

The new principle seems impossibly young, and a slightly cynical grab at a new demographic. I wonder exactly what is written in those files of Buffy's. Her class presented her with that award acknowledging all the baddies she fended off, but I wonder if her permanent record explains this all away as teenage fantasy or actually makes mention of the sunnydale weirdnesses?
I think Buffy will be great at her new job. However I don't really understand on what basis it was offered to her. She hangs around her sister's school, makes strange comments suggesting her sister should be expellled or suspended, bursts into a class in a panic, and yet still they think she might be a moderating and helpful influence on alienated teenagers? Interesting technique!
Oh, and did anyone else see a spark between Buffy and the new principal?

Some great one liners in this ep, can't remember what they were just now, but still

Looking forward to a very enjoyable season seven!

Oh and i wondered something - how the heck did Dawn get her mobile back after the zombie guy had it when Buffy called? Did he go give it back to her?!

Did any body else have a problem with Dawn's choice of clothing for her first day back at school? I mean, i might be sounding picky here, but that sweater with all the triangles on was just not nice in any way shape or form :dead:

Spike - Buffy, duck.
Buffy - What? Duck? There's a duck?

Buffy - Dawn, you're gonna be late for school!
Dawn - I'm comfortable with that!

Buffy - Again, wrong sister. I'm the one that dates dead guys. And no offense, but they were hotties. I mean, I-I'm sure you had a great personality...

Spike - (backing away from Buffy) I'm not fast. Not a quick study. (tearfully) I dropped my board in the water and the chalk all ran. (more calmly) Sure to be caned. (laughs) Shoulda seen that coming. (that was so sad)

Hehe, oh and something else - i coulda sworn they missed a scene out, where they're riding to school in Xander's car? I'm not sure, i could be thinking of another ep, but it just struck me as odd that they went straight from Buffy's house, to commercial, to getting out of the car at school? Like something was missing?

Unusual styling choice for Buffy. I seriously thought, "No Dawn, you can't go out in that!". Ewwww.

Initially I wondered about this too, but then decided the cut just made it look like the Zombie fella was speaking on the phone, when in fact he was actually in the same room as Buffy. Could that be it?

Dawn's crack about the amazing reception was great too

Dawn - And Buffy? Isn't this reception amazing? I'm in the frickin' basement!

Hehehe

I thought that he had the phone in his hand? Hand on i'll go see if the transcript says anything....um no doesn't say anything, but she does walk toward the sound of the phone and sounds pretty clear and loud when we see her near the janitor...so i dunno.

Yep - there's a scene missing there - b/c before they get out at the school - they're driving along and talking - and Dawn has a line like "See, this is why I don't want you talking to my friends." -- or something like that --- but, yep, you're right - they cut a scene - not sure why tho -- odd ---

[Tabitha: Her class presented her with that award acknowledging all the baddies she fended off, but I wonder if her permanent record explains this all away as teenage fantasy or actually makes mention of the sunnydale weirdnesses?]

Well, considering that Snyder was the principal I doubt that there would be anything good in her record of those years. She probably gets blamed for everything bad that happened.

[Sammy O'Neill: how the heck did Dawn get her mobile back after the zombie guy had it when Buffy called?]

Actually, Buffy receives the call and assumes that its Dawn. But its the janitor's voice coming over the phone as she walks through the basement. When she turns the corner the janitor is standing there, finishing his line, with his hands at his sides. He didn't need a phone to call her.

[Sammy O'Neill: i coulda sworn they missed a scene out, where they're riding to school in Xander's car?]

[Highlander II: Yep - there's a scene missing there - b/c before they get out at the school - they're driving along and talking - and Dawn has a line like "See, this is why I don't want you talking to my friends."]

No, I'm afraid you're both mistaken. The scene and line referred to come from the next episode, when Xander again drives Buffy and Dawn to school. Since you haven't really given anything away, its not a spoiler.

This is when I really have to start my job. Its very easy to let info accidentally spill over and terribly tempting to give out clues when others are confused and asking questions.

I hate to be a nag, but now that more of the crowd is joining us, those of us on Episode 11 have to be extra mindful of the timeline and censor ourselves. Especially this season, which has surprises and plot/character developments in almost every episode.

In the meantime, Welcome! to the SkyOne members of our fan base. You have tons of Buffy fun ahead of you.

Is it?? I could have sworn there was a part in "Lessons" - but I've watched all of S7 back-to-back a couple times - some scenes start to blend together ---

ooops!

So Dawn had the phone the whole time, and it just looked like the janitor had it? Well Tabitha you were right then luv

Thought it a very good episode for the opener of the season. Always apprehensive about the first one. I too jumped when the bad guy 'stabbed' Dawn in the eye. LOL Dawn does seem to have grown up alot. I thought it great that shes made 2 friends already plus Buffy being mistaken for her mum twice was hilarious. Hehehe!!!!!!!! Wish I looked that good. Looking forward to the second episode.

Great episode - to be honest I thought it probably wouldn't live up to my expectations, as the first episode of the series is usually hyped up and then is a disappointment, but I was really impressed.

Ghoul manifestations and a nameless someone placing the talisman in the bathroom were intriguing and the return to Sunnydale High School was fun. I think we're going to see a lot more of Dawn and her classmates this season, and so far she seems to have discarded the whiny brat persona - long may it continue.

Spike's obviously gone a bit doo-lally, but on the plus side, it opens up the character for James Marsters to explore plus he looks good. The part about him trying to 'cut it out' was really poignant. Didn't pay too much attention to his ramblings but they may have further significance later on. How did he get into the basement by the way? - Didn't Xander say there was no secret passageways and I doubt he walked through the school entrance. It was a little heartless of Buffy to just leave him there I thought, obviously she had to go and rescue dawn, but she could've gone back to him. And what did he mean by 'three of us'?

Liked the way that everything was so bright, cheery and new beginning-y contrasted with the darkness that Spike was in - the end was excellent with all the big bads appearing one after one. I take it this is an actual thing rather that just Spike's inner demons. And it added to the whole return to the beginning theme, with Sunnydale High reopening, Spike returning to William?, Dawn's new friends are a little reminscent of Willow and Xander, Anya's under pressure to conform to her old vengence self - the list goes on.

Some good lines that had me chuckling

Buffy: No I'm the one who dates dead guys and they were hotties, I mean, I'm sure you had a good personality...

Buffy (answering her phone): It's...a dog...em...dogminder
(into phone): three dead?...I'll be right there
Principal(horrified): your dogs are dead?
Buffy rushes off
Principal: Nice to meet you.. and good luck with that dog...tragedy

Oh, forgot, completely cringed for Dawn when Buffy ran into her classroom shouting about it not being safe. And hey, it's pretty easy to get a job in Sunnydale isn't it?

Phew, that's me finished.

A bit of trivia that I forgot to mention (except in the Spoiler Country thread, which many of you may not be reading).

The scenes in England of Willow and Giles in the countryside were shot near the village of Keynsham, which is close to Tony Head's house in Timsbury. Sorry, my knowledge of UK geography is nil, so you'll have to track it down yourself.

In fact, when bad weather closed in, Anthony brought the entire crew home! Some of the scenes in later episodes were shot in his house and garden.

better late than never... my comments!

A solid start to the season.. good too see Willow has been getting some help from Giles and his coven over here in England. I didn't think Buffy would be the show where something like that got glossed over, so I'm glad to be right.

Not much to add to the previous comments, just to re-iterate "how did Spike get in the basement" and how did Xander get to be in charge of the site?Shoddy construction job on the barthroom floor btw

Plenty of scoping out where things will be going this season.. Dawn getting some slayer training, and a scooby gang of sorts. Spike & his "mental health issues" & his soul! Buffy as the school counsellor - but likethe principal said, Sunnydale is not exactly the top-spot for people to move to for work... bad reputation! I wonder how long til she tells him exactly what happened to Flutie and Snyder...

And the girl in Turkey.. this is a new plot development style for BtVS.. will be interesting to see how it develops...
