Re: Gandalf - more than a Wizard Alatar is a Maia related to Orome; he is one of the two blue wizards (Ithryn Luin) who went into the far west. Not much is known about him and his friend Pallando; in his Letters, Tolkien fears that they failed and suspects that they started secret cults and magic traditions that outlasted the fall of Sauron. An alternative name is given to Alatar in HoME 12, The five wizards: Morinehtar, darkness-slayer.

Re: Gandalf - more than a Wizard I hear ya. I've read the books, but find out I'm still missing a lot, just as in my previous example. I kept looking at Alatar as Annatar. I didn't even know who Alatar was, but I knew who Annatar was. Ack! ![]()

Re: Gandalf - more than a Wizard Gandalf and Sauron are of the same kind. So yeah, he's more than a wizard. When he was sent to middle earth to balance things along with four other wizards (Saruman, Palando, Alatar, and Radagast) they took on another form called the Istari.
