A Fairy Short April Fool's Fic

(pun intended!)

Standard disclaimers apply. I do not own FK; I am just borrowing the characters. This is yet another sequel in the City of Chaos series.

* * * * *

Natalie Lambert was reading a file. Taking a sip from her mug and immediately tasting bitterness, she looked down to see that her cup of hot chocolate had turned into lemon juice. A small black cat looked up at her from the floor and meowed.

“Who did this?” She wondered aloud. “Surely it couldn’t have been you…could it?” Nat remembered the fairy dragon that had taken the form of a cat, and wondered if this was the same creature. Then Natalie remembered what day it was. “Is this your idea of an April Fool’s joke?”

The cat meowed again and ran out the door before she could say or do anything else. Looking into her cup again, Natalie noticed that her drink was, once again, hot chocolate. “Very funny,” she muttered.

* * * * *

Nick glanced down as the black cat jumped onto his desk. “Xiao Xing? What are you doing here?”

She meowed.

“What is it? Can’t you just tell me?”

The cat rolled her eyes. *Follow me,* she said telepathically. *Natalie needs your help.*

“Of course!” Nick grabbed his jacket. Hopefully, his fiancé wasn’t in danger, but if she was, he would deal with it.

* * * * *

The vampire followed Xiao Xing to the morgue and burst into the lab. “Nat? Are you all right?”

She looked up. “Nick? I’m fine.”

The vampire looked down at the cat. “You said she needed my help.”

A bottle of expensive red wine appeared on the desk. *I believe she needs help finishing that off,* said the feline.

Nick and Nat exchanged glances, than both of them burst out laughing. “I do believe I’ve been had,” the vampire said.

*April Fools,* Xiao Xing said.

The cat's actually a recurring original character who first appears in my story The Scent of Darkness.
