The Haunted Knight

Note: I'm not really sure what this is about, I wrote it while listening to the Lord of the Rings soundtrack so I guess that's my inspiration. This is just a one post fic.

The road was dark. Mist rolled across it in waves. A soft breeze rustled through the trees sending a chill up his spine. He knew something was out there, he could feel it, just beyond his reach. He scanned the forest, looking for any movement.

Nothing.

But hadn't that been what he had expected to find? He continued walking, trying to tread as lightly as possible. He spun around suddenly as he felt something brush against his arm. He looked down to see that it was a leaf fallen from the tree above him.

Trees. He hated them. They hid things, things that wanted to be hidden. He would have much preferred seeing what was out there. He heard a faint rustle up ahead. He looked in the direction the sounds had come from but all he could see was mist and moon light. Then, black fabric came into view. His eyes grew wide as he stumbled back. The boots, the armor, the helmet, it all came into the light. He began running backwards. He tripped, falling into a pile of leaves. The warrior's head shot up, its glowing red eyes locking in on its target.

He pulling his legs up beneath him and forced himself to his feet. He spun around and began to run. He didn't look back but he could hear the sound of beating hooves on the ground. He could feel the vibrations in the earth. It was gaining. He veered off to his left and charged through the woods. His breathing was shallow and his heart pounding in his chest. He could still hear his pursuer chasing him. He ducked under a branch and threw himself behind a tree, hoping the roots would keep him hidden.

He heard the warrior draw up his horse. He could hear the animal's hot breath heaving out of its chest. It shifted from foot to foot as its rider scanned the forest with unnaturally keen eyes. The seconds seemed to become hours as he tried to push down his fear. He pressed himself back father against the plant's trunk and squeezed his eyes shut. Finally he heard the rider jerk the reins and turn its horse around. The hooves pounding back towards the road at a maddening pace.

He let out a soundless sigh of relief as he looked around the tree at the warrior. He pulled himself to his feet and he stepped over the roots only to step down on a pile of leaves. They were crushed under his weight. He looked up sharply at where the rider had been and saw nothing. Then he felt moist air on the back of his neck. He turned around slowly, his fate already known. He looked up to find himself face to face with the red eyed warrior siting on top of his black beast.
