Question Jedi vs Sith

Now I know Jedi are all do-gooding little saints who save the Republic yaddah yaddah.... But are there aspects to the Jedi, and the Jedi code, which could be criticised? Does being a Sith have anything going for it, other than tatoos and you get to add "Darth" to your name?

Thought it might be interesting *g*

These are my suggestions:

(i) Better dress-sense,

(ii) two handed light-sabres,

(iii) and never having to say "Don't worry, I have a good feeling about this... "

The whole "know no love" thing seems to me a bit daft. If you love someone enough, you could love them enough to know that htey would prefer the greater good etc. and to be truly good, you should love. Love everyone. Even your enemy...

But that's my take on that

Plus, you don't have to do daft breathing exercises and the like *g*

that's true but then again look at what Anakin's love did to him. Any strong emotion has the ability to make someone do things that aren't good.

Only having two Sith at any one time would certainly make you feel special to be one though wouldn't it?

.......But it was made wrong by being banned: if he had been allowed to love, but taught why the Jedi were wary of it...

I think that because they said it was wrong, it tainted it. And who is to say that just because Anakin turned bad that anyone who had a relationship would?

As for only two Sith... what if you really couldn't stand the other one? *g*

Being a jedi is better as there's more than 2 of you for a start!

And that's a good thing? What if you're shy for a start? *g*

Better fashion sense? Did you SEE Darth Vader's outfit? Granted it hides the hideously disfigured man beneath, as well as whatever prostheses he might have just to keep him upright, but Anakin's padawan outfit is MUCH better.

As for there being only two, that can be good (if you do happen to be shy ) or bad, even if you LIKE the other one. What if something cataclysmic happens to the other (like he gets chopped in half by an upstart young Jedi) or both of you happen to catch the same cold? Who's gonna take over? You got someone waiting in the wings?

Vader's grand plan to take over from the emperor rested on his ability to convince Luke to follow him because, "I am your father." Great plan, numb-nuts! Guess Luke didn't like that revelation. What's your next plan, smartie? Guess you better get used to being the aging second fiddle!

What a fun discussion!

On the topic of Jedi's being forbidden to love - I like the route that Skip was following up above. How could you care about anything if you could not love? Would becoming a Jedi mean you had to foreswear having any love for even family members.
I am pretty sure Luke when to rescue Han and Leia for a good reason - was it the greater good?

I think perhaps a better description for the love that Jedi's are forbidden to indulge in is "Selfish Love", or come to think of it, "Selfless Love". When you really fall in love with someone, your happinness is at least in part derived from their happiness. You might do anything to ensure they are safe and well, or put their interests before that of the 'greater good'.

It would make sense that Jedi's are forbidden to involve themselves in this very dangerous kind of love, so that they can keep thinking clearly and make the right decisions.

It is a good point as to why Jedi's are forbidden to love

And yet, the entire New Jedi Order is based on love.

Problem is, people will behave selfishly or rashly or without the thought to consequences if they react emotionally at all.

Padme's the one who said she thought Jedi weren't allowed to love, but that doesn't mean she's right. Jedi can love and feel a whole host of emotions. Where they have to prove themselves as true Jedi Knights is in their reactions. They have to put aside their emotions and calmly (often quickly) respond to the situation based on reason.

Where Jedi often make their biggest mistakes is in situations where they can't or chose not to set aside those emotions.

Remember Luke's near fall to the dark side in RotJ. He'd remained calm, tried reasoning and negotiating his way out of conflict, but when his closest friend (and only sister) was threatened, WHO-Boy, watch out!

Maybe that's why Ewan and Liam seemed so flat in TPM. GL is a pretty heavy-handed director, but maybe he told them (again and again) that the Jedi had to be calm and rational and leave emotion behind... at least most of the time.

Anyway, I honestly don't think there's a Jedi mandate that "no Jedi shall feel love." Does anyone remember the Jedi "rules" that were on the Ep 2 poster? Not that I think they were "real" but just supposed to tease audiences with something forbidden.

On the other hand maybe Maul's horns are better than Obi's braids... all a matter of taste, eh? But yeah, Jedi robes beat Vader's suit-and-hat any day LOL.

Yep, GL can wangle it to say that the lost Jedi lore is what fuels Luke and co's not following the no-love rule--- unless you see Yoda stopping Luke from going in Dagobah because he loves Leia and Han??

Besides, repressing might make it even worse! And who wants to live like a monk/nun ? [No offence all monks and nuns]

Naaaaw. I like the Padawan braid. It's one of the few original things I saw in TPM.

Besides, can you imagine how frelling painful getting that tattoo might have been?

Repression is seldom a good thing... just look at Anakin.
