1.1 & 1.2: Emissary Part 1 & 2 Benjamin Sisko takes command of station Deep Space 9, putting him in the midst of an ongoing conflict between the Bajorans and the Cardassians. Shortly thereafter, Sisko discovers the existence of the wormhole, and inadvertently becomes the Emissary, a major figure in the Bajoran religion. annette ![]()

This my favourite ST series pilot episode, and one of the best episodes of all. Great special effects, first orb experience, first time Odo shapeshifts, we meet all the series regulars, runabouts and the wormhole. And the understated classic hard sci-fi message: Advanced species (prophets) will seem like gods to those less advanced.

I'm still undecided about whether or not it's my fave pilot but it's definetly close. I did immediately like The Kira/Sisko interaction (and of course O'Brien warning him before he went to talk to her for the first time - that was CLASSIC!!)

OK, I finally got to see these episodes for the first time in I don't know how many years. Just a question: When or where did ANYONE say that Sisko was the "Emissary"? I must have missed it somewhere but for the life of me I can't remember where in the two parter it was mentioned. ARGH! :rolly2: In fact, in subsequent episodes I don't know that anyone has even mentioned it so far. I KNOW (for a fact) it eventually does get brought up but so far in these repeats on SpikeTV I haven't yet seen/heard it. Anyone? jom

Without watching it again I can't be certain, but I'm sure that when he is taken inside the wormhole and speaks to the prophets/wormhole aliens they call him 'Emissary'. Obviously, at this point in the series that means nothing. It only gains any significance much later in the series when the Sisko's fate is tied to the prophets/wormhole aliens more closely. And we discover that Sisko's mother was a prophet/wormhole alien.

Thanks! Yeah, I remember some of the things that later happened in the series and there was even one episode where some Bajorian claimed HE was the Emissary...but later proven wrong. I just found it odd that no one mentioned to Sisko he was this Emissary (I must have somehow missed that portion of the show). But if that is true how did ANYONE else know he was the Emissary? So far (in the repeats anyway) nobody has mentioned it. I do know that later Kira talks to Sisko about it but where/when did it become known to all? Just curious. jom

Kai Opaka says "Ironic. One who does not wish to be among us is to be the emissary." during their meeting on the planet. This is my first time to see this episode. I figured I might as well give DS9 a chance...and I do not know better place than the beginning to start. I just got all of season 1 in...I've been pleasantly suprised after the pilot...we'll see.

It's a long time ago, but I remember being really impressed with the pilot. I still think it is one of the best series openers, though 'Caretaker' and 'Broken Bow' are also very good. I was less impressed with the first season but stick with DS9 as it gets better and better IMHO and is my favourite series.
