Favourite Book (and why!)

So, then, which have you preferred of his books, and why? (You don't need to have read them all, but voting for the only one you've read may be a little daft!)

I think it would have to be the Hobbit. It is a much easier read than the Lord of the Rings.

I'm afraid I have to agree, but it was a close run thing with the LOTR books... they others didn't grab me in the same way, either.

Afraid I voted for the Hobbit too, I remember it with great affection. I'm trying to get my daughter to read it. She likes Harry Potter, but just won't take it.

I have read Farmer Giles of Ham. I liked it. Can Tolkein do humour? Yes, I think so.

I voted for ROTK, as it was the only one out of the lot that kept me up to the wee hours of the morning reading. I think it had everything and was very exciting, though it slowed down a bit towards the end. I haven't read either Farmer Giles of Ham or Tree and Leaf so I can't comment on those, yet.

Had to say ROTK too, it has more going on in it. The hobbit was great, but not as good as the whole of LOTR.
:flash:

I would have to say that the Silmarillion is my favorite book. It covers a lot more material than LOTR, and has some really good stories.

Well, I see LOTR as an entire book, but I picked TTT above since I just love all the interaction between Sam and Gollum... and I love the ents.

I also love The Silmarillion though.

I voted RotK, however it's probably a tie between that and the Hobbit.

Sam is my favorite LotR character, and a lot of focus was on him during RotK. I also loved the fight for the Shire, and having Aragorn take his place as king.

As for the Hobbit, it just had a good feel to it. When you finish reading it you're happy, even though the ending is bittersweet.

I agree with Ewlyn, LOTR should be looked at as a complete book. It was how it originally was printed. I love all of Tolkien though, the Hobbit for the joy it gave me, the Simarillion for its history, and all the others for the comedy, and wonder that they produced. Parents should take special notice of "Father Christmas Tales". J.R.R. was one cool Dad to write something like that for his children.

I'd agree with the comments that LOTR should be one book, but just to clarify the previous post: It was not printed as one book originally. Professor Tolkien wrote it as one, but the publishers said it was too long and made him split it into three to get it published.

I'd also agree with the comments about the Hobbit. It was a nice pleasant 'feel good' book.

I, however, have voted for The Fellowship of the Ring. In my opinion it has the best of everything. It starts off gentle and light hearted as the Hobbit, but goes on an action packed journey, turning it into something much darker than it began with. In my opinion, its the contrast the book goes through, that makes it stand out from the rest.
