What does "Darth" mean? I remember reading in Empire magazine ages ago that Darth Vader was almost called Garth - makes me think of a guy in a big black shiny cowboy hat. With the first two episodes featuring various characters with the prefix "Darth", I was wondering if anyone actually knows what it means? Is it the dark side equivalent of Jedi? Something to do with the Sith?? Answers on a postcard please.... Or well, you could just post them here I suppose ![]()

I read an interview with Lucas awhile back, a long while back, and he said that he based the words Darth Vader on similar Dutch words which would translate into "Dark Father." Don't know what Darth means in the Star Wars Universe, though. :star::star::star:

I reckon that, originally, Star wars was never meant to be as big or as deep as it ended up being (i seem to remember reading this in an interview somewhere). The name Darth Vader, assuming it means dark father in Dutch, probly just stuck cos it sounds cool. :alienooh: :dead:  :dead: :alienooh:

The Dutch origins are a good tie in for the Darth Vader character, but aren't really relevent in the case of other Sith. Perhaps if it was equivalent to 'Master' - so that the senior member of a pair of Sith was called 'Darth' it might work. But in epsiode one we have Darth Sidious and Darth Maul - master and apprentice.

Guess I'm the only one who's read all the old literature, because I know the answer to this one. Darth means Dark Lord of the Sith That's it. The name Darth Vader may have originated with Dark Father, but since Lucas used "Darth" as a title for ALL sith lords, that's the title's meaning. Hope that helped.
