Maybourne and Treason

Hey,

Here's an observation I got when I was watching Watergate.

SPOILERS

Maybourne is there in the Russian fascility in Watergate. Why is he not in jail?

In Shades of Grey, his secret operation was exposed, so why didn't he go to jail then instead of after the Russian incident?

The next time we see him is in Chain Reaction when Jack gets him out. Maybourne is said to be convicted of treason. This would assume that he was sent there after the Russian incident. So he was charged with treason for his involvement with Russia.

Why did they not put him in jail after Shades of Grey. Jack knew of his involvement in the operation. Isn't that treason? And if not, why wasn't he sent to jail anyway.

that's actually a good question --

hadn't actually thought much about it (but I didn't see Shades of Grey until after I'd seen Watergate) -

interesting point tho --

was he actually 'reported' and turned in after SoG??

I've been wondering about that.
It's probably one of the reasons Jack was so surprised to see him in Russia.

Is it possible to deal your way out of treason? I have no idea, but if anyone could weasel their way out of it Maybourne could.

I'd just chalk it up to another "whoops, we didn't think that through" from the writers. I'm glad he's back, though.

Or....maybe he ran off before the, ahem, stuff hit the fan. I'm sure he didn't plan on getting caught assisting the Russians

Don't mind me, apparently I'm just posting to post. If I had a point it was lost long ago:dead:

I was under the impression that he just 'skipped town' when he realised the jig was up! I mean - if Jack can call in big favours, I get the feeling Maybourne might have been able to too.

So, he skipped town to go to Russia - then, after the Watergate situation the Russians handed him back over as a gesture of goodwill or gratitude.

The bit I don't get is how Jack managed to get him out in the S5 ep - that is one big favour! Although maybe Maybournes incarceration would have been a secret anyway - you can't very well go around telling everyone why you are locking those kind of traitors up for - it would kinda undermine the whole secrecy angle, right?

I think it comes down to the "who knows who" favours brigade. It would only take one to get Maybourne released, or even on bail, and his old chums would probably be very willing to help him into secret, even if he didn't already have his own plans for staying out of harms way in a series of safe houses...

If Jack can get him out for Chain Reaction, many others (including the most likely, Kinsey) would be able to stop him getting there in the first place, at least long enough to run.

or maybe they intended Chain Reaction to go out before Watergate.

I agree, PTeppic. He's got friends in high places, he was orignally working illegally with the whole op, and I'm sure he only got into it knowing that if he got caught, he could get himself out as well. Friends in high places, a few strings pulled...
