The '78 attempt was over ambitious. The producers had high hopes of making it the definitive film, then found that a/ they ran out of money and b/ nobody was going to sit still for eight hours to watch it. I'm also told it was incredibly long in production (6 or 7 years). It ended up trying to cram the entire trilogy in a single film that was patched together quickly from the parts that had been completed, simply to try and pay for it what had been done. The result? Much of the early parts of the story are in place, but the later parts were progressively more rushed, large formative parts not represented at all. There was enough there to show it really would have been a real humdinger of a film, if it had been finished. But not as one film!

As far as I recall there have been three attempts at the LOTR. The first used actors. But was best described as loosely based upon the book. Like the War of the Worlds of the same era was vaguely based upon HG Wells. The second, often refered to as animated, was a mix of animation and actors. I am awful with dates, but mid-late seventies looks good for that. The third is the current effort. The amount of marketting hype behind it will ensure it is a success, even if it proves to be awful. The critics seem to like it, which is always a bad sign.

Saw it in Tesco a couple of weeks ago. Strange that. A supermarket is a better place for obtaining film and music than the specialist stores. You culd also try Amazon Renting, I suspect, might prove more difficult. Unless you have a really good video store e.g. not Blockbuster.

My mate loaned me the original animated classic brought to you buy Saul Zaentz who bought the rights to the book and he produced it. Ralph Bakshi Directed it. It was ok but Sam Gamgee seemed Gay as did most of the characters, but Sam the most. Nothing against Gays, it's just that the characters are not gay. Saul Zaentz was also an Executive Producer ofr the new film Directed by Peter Jackson as he still has some ownership over the film rights. You can find this Animated version on Video and DVD in any UK HMV or Virgin megastore. I've often seen them lying about in piles at HMV.
