Re: Best Gemmell book? I think it will always be Legend for me. No matter how much more technically adept he gets or how he improves on his characterisation, he'll never better the pathos he works into Legend's final chapters. It's the only one of his books I can read whenever I feel the urge, without feeling that it has diminished since the last reading... Waylander's a possible exception...

Re: Best Gemmell book? i gave my Dad the new Gemmell, Troy, for his bday and he said it's really awesome (not that there was any doubt!) but i do think Legend will always be Gemmell's #1 classic.

Re: Best Gemmell book? i have issues with the troy thing. i studied classics for 7 years, so i find it hard to read books by people set in that time (or films) because if htey get it wrong, i get snarky! that and i never enjoyed the troy story. there are so many others that i prefer that would make great fantasy books.

Re: Best Gemmell book? Having not long ago re-read some of his books, I would add Waylander as one of his best books, along with Legend and The Quest For Lost Heroes.

Firstly David really does do his research, and secondly, while it's the story of Troy, it's not a re-writing of the classic story, it's about characters who didn't get the main focus and uses Troy as the backdrop. Finally, it's historical fiction based on historical myth and fiction, so there's always going to be plenty of room for interpretation. | |

Re: Best Gemmell book? yeah, i like king beyond the gate, too. its maybe my second fav, along with the waylander stuff. i do like waylander. i know he has a lot of tortuered men who become reluctant heros, but waylander was teh most vivid of those hmm, im still not sure about the troy stuff, cos there is also the element that i am kinda sick of the whole troy myth after 7 years of studying it! but i might, when i have more cash and feel more in a reading mood ![]()

Re: Best Gemmell book? I agree as well. The Rigante books are probably Gemmell's best. The story was superb and I also felt it was an subtle copy of the struggle between the Scottish and English for Scotland's right to be a free nation. That was one of the reasons I appreciated the books so much. However, White Wolf was also a classic, the character of Skilgannon was inspiring. I've just started reading a new one of his, "Troy", which started slow but develops into a thrilling story.
