Have you stopped reading Wheel of Time?

Stop reading the wheel of time eh.....

Kind of I suppose, I bought the last book (is it book 10) in the series and then moved house and forgot to read it.
Being completely honest about it, a lot of the series drags to the point where you actually have to force yourself to continue reading about exactly how many buttons were on what dress, just in case it's important....which...to date...it has rarely been.

I get the impression he (Jordan) is determined to make this series 'epic' but instead of adding more content or sub plots which are dynamic, he creates 'filler' text which slowly erodes your concentration and makes your brain dribble out of your ears.

That said, I'm enjoying the series, the characters are well developed and the main storyline is very involving.

I finally got around to getting the first book in the long series by Jordan. The Wheel of Time.

Oh I wish I hadnt bothered and Oh I wish I hadnt spent my money too and waited to see if the Library could get it for me

There were some good scenes, in fact when the Trollocs, Darkmen appeared I nearly cheered, thankful of something interesting to happen. It was page 70 before anything exciting happened in this book, which I think is bad story telling
The dream scenes were also the only highlight in the book too.

I only liked Lan as a character. The others I felt were quite lacking. And the issue with braided hair got so on my nerves I had images of large sissors coming to mind
I was disappointed though in the character development. I felt Moirane wasnt' very inspiring considering she could channel the Earth's Power. Now I imagine that would be pretty powerful and she would be able to do a lot with that, but the magic in the book seemed low key to me.
The lads were imature, and I couldn't get into any of them.

I knew that Wheel of Time was an epic fantasy, however like a few epics there was plenty that could have been left out of the story. I sometimes think epic story writers forget that readers have imaginations and feel compelled to tell you every little detail.
The plotline wasnt very tight and drifted off into substories that didnt move the rest on that much. I almost felt that Jordan just wanted to tell us every idea that popped into his head. Not that the ideas were all bad, just that they could have been kept for another story with different characters.

I won't be continuing with the series, it's too long winded for me and the characters aren't catching my attention

I liked most of the main characters in this series, I just thought it should have reached the "Last Battle" sooner then it has done. However after reading this thread, and specifically the post from Mark Urpen, that stated the Wheel of Time was originally supposed to have 12 novels and thus the "Wheel of Time" it begins to make more sense to continue to read to the end.

I had already read Winter's Heart and look what I got for christmas but a hard cover copy of that book

So anyway I am glad I read this post because now I look forward to the next book!

I have been reading The Wheel of Time books since Aug. of 2005 and I am up to book 6 now and I'm still hook on it. The Wheel of Time books are the best books I have ever read and I don't see myself stop reading all 10 soon to be 11 books.

I was 13 when I started reading WoT, I am now 28!

Sometime in the middle I got fed up with waiting and waiting and never getting to the end. When I heard Jordan say in an interview he was going to keep writing until he dropped dead, that was sort of the last straw...and starting to write other books in the middle certainly doesn't look good for the series.

If he finishes the series I will read it then.

Clavin you are basically at the apex of the series right now .... it gradually starts going downhill from there. But I look forward to the release of book 11 and will definitely finish out the series. The way I figure, it should end on a very good note.

I'm afraid I agree with Rune. I couldn't read further than the first book, and it was the endless 'tugging of the braid' that turned me off. It had good potential as a story, but the constant repetition of that girl yanking at her hair every time she was angry (and that was all the time) got so bad it was leaping off the page and I couldn't get past it!

I've read all of the 10 main WoT books - but I'm seriously considering giving it up. The first few weren't bad - nothing special, but they were enjoyable at least. The last 2 - 3 books have been awful, and unless the quality improves a lot for the next few books, I won't bother reading them. CoT has to be the worst waste of 800 or so pages I've ever seen. Jordan always amazes me in how he can write an 800 page novel without putting in any plot or worthwhile description. Focusing on description is fine, if that's the type of novel you're trying to write - like Peake, for example. But that description has to be good, and it shouldn't focus on the clothing people are wearing. I'll read a summary of what happens in the later books, and that'll probably tell me the rest of the story, without having to waste a lot of time wading through pages of nothing but cliches and pointless description. A parody of WoT on the Malazan forums (it's disappeared now, I think) was actually better to read than the last 3 - 4 of his books, though a lot shorter.

@Moonlover - be glad you never read the later books. The first book was one of his best - the later books gave up the plot so that he could put in more pointless description and cliches.

Sadly like a lot of people here are reporting the first few books up to about Book 5 I reckon I really quite enjoyed but after that things went rapidly downhill in terms of plot development and character desciptions etc..

I'm another long suffering fan who has been following this series for over 10 years but because I'm such a lover of EPIC fanatsy series and because this series still has enough elements of EPIC fantasy in it albeit very slow moving of late, I will be sticking to the end of the tale.

YEP I'm just a glutton for piunishment and because I always like to see how a story of this length ends...

Originally, the Wheel of Time was supposed to be 5 novels I think. He decided that he wanted to get as much money out of it as possible though, so kept going. Maybe he'll end it with 12 novels, but that seems impossible if the plot moves as slowly as it did in Crossroads of Twilight. If he had ended this in 5 novels, it would have at least been a good series, but unless the quality improves a lot in the next few books, that doesn't seem likely.

It will only be 12 novels... Jordan has confirmed this a number of times over the past year or so.

But then there's the prequels too (2 more to come). He will finish the main series first though.
