FAQ's for Fan Fiction

I Can't Write!
Nor can I, but I keep trying!
Seriously, nobody can until they start

Why write Fan-Fiction?
Because it means we can describe something that we think ought to happen, but didn't see in the show itsef.
Or simply to put something that was wrong, straight again.
Or even to test our own imagination in a ready made universe.
But most of all because it is FUN!

How do I Write?
It does not matter. Just start with an idea of what happens and see where your imagination goes.
There is a good thread offering tips Here that has been compiled by a fair number of the writers and readers here, should you get stuck on technicalities.

What do I Write About?
For this part of Ascifi, your story should cover Star Trek in some form or other. All of the other sections on Ascifi welcome Fan-Fiction if they are pertinent to the particular show.
The only limitation is that it must not be 'Adult' orientated e.g. not rated above a mild 'R' or '15'.

Okay, I've got the Greatest Fiction Ever. How Do I Post It?
First, my warmest congratulations. You've completed the hard bit.
My preference is for stories to be posted complete. It makes them easier to read and follow.
If it is particularly long (much over 20,000 words), you may prefer to break it into smaller, more manageable, chapters in individual posts.

You can post either direct to the board (please, try and leave a space between paragraphs. Copy and paste from Internet Explorer is good for this)
Or attach it as a plain text file, if it is small enough (40K is the limit)
Or finally you can post a link to a web page.

Finally, add the details to our index, so we can find it. All done! Now where's the next one?

What About Headers and Titles?
Ideally the Title will include which Trek you are using:- TOS, TNG, DS9, ENT, VOY or MIS for anything else.
Optionally you can add the style at the end of the title. (Humour and Drabbles are popular).

The story header should include the following:-
*Title- The title of your masterpiece
*Author- Your Name
*E-Mail - Your e-mail (optional)
*Category- Angst, Act. Adv, (optional, but nice to see)
*Spoilers - (If it is related to a particular official episode)
*Rating- pg Must never be stronger than 'R' or '15' see Content Warning below
*Content Warning- MUST be included if the story is stronger in content than PG13 and explain what the breach is
*Summary- Short description of the story
*Disclaimer- Voyager and the characters aboard her (except any additional characters) in this story are copyright of Paramount. No resemblance is intended to any person alive or dead. (Or similar)
*Comments- Optional. Anything else you want to note. e.g. rip me apart gently, this is my first time

I'm a Reader. I Liked/Didn't Like What I Read. What Do I Say?
On the behalf of all writers. Thank You for reading our works. Even bigger thanks for replying!
The only encouragement and reward the writer ever gets is a reply!
Even a simple 'I liked it!' will make his/her day.
Better still is the response that says 'I liked this, because...'
If you did not like something, say so, but gently.
The poor writer has put his heart and soul into his work, the last thing he wants is somebody pouring scorn all over it. It is essential to say why. Sometimes, as a reviewer, you will have a point. At all times it is your opinion. But a little gentle criticism goes a long way to helping writers improve.

That sounds good to me, Ray. I can't add anything really. Now that I am a Supermod, I am able to make 'announcements' which are like stickies, but stay right at the top of the page for a specified amount of time (see padders 'Avatar' or 'Infinitely Better' announcements.) If you want I could make this one?

H2 will love me for this mentioning. In the Highlander forum there is a separate section for a group known as Clan MacSlow which is for slow fanfic writers. We welcome ANY fic there.

yep - that's a special exception that I, as HL forum mod, made just for that section of HL - b/c the Clan caters to ALL genres and there isn't really a place at ascifi for non-scifi stuff (duh - ascifi - it's the name, and that's totally cool!) - but Clan MacSlow lost it's old forum, and padders was nice enough to let us hang out here!

but yeah - if anyone has anything that doesn't fit anywhere else, and they wanna join up w/ Clan MacSlow - they're more than welcome ---
