Lightbulb Buffy - The Animated Series

was poking around over at tvtome.com and there's some info up about the animated series.

Quote:
March 23, 2002

The pilot for the tv show just finished, It's was 44min (2 Episodes) and had the voices of Sarah Gellar, David Boreanaz, Allyson Hannigan, Nick Brendon, Charisma Charpenter, Robbi Pounds (Oz), and Jonhathen Knight (Giles).

the series is due to air in September 2002 in the States on FOX network, and will be a 1/2 hour program. but, apparently the 1st episode will be an hour, or split into 2 eps.

Re: Buffy - The Animated Series

[Highlander II: ...Robbi Pounds (Oz), and Jonhathen Knight (Giles)]

Boy, that's going to take some getting used to. I wonder if they will try to copy the style of speaking of the originals or use their own natural voices.

So, they have Angel, but no Dawn. That answers one question.

I wonder how long the actors have signed for this series. Will SMG and the others be doing this after the live-action series runs it's course or will they eventually find voice replacements for everyone?

Questions, questions. Oh well, time will tell.

well - it's supposed to be the Buffy gang back in HS - so, who knows what they're gonna do --

and - if Joss is following canon - Dawn wouldn't be there - b/c she really wasn't there -- (did that make sense?)

and yeah - the voices are gonna be weird --

i wanna know what the characters are gonna look like, and if they're gonna bring in Spike and Dru and Darla and such ---

[Highlander II: ...if Joss is following canon - Dawn wouldn't be there...]

IF... It's a cartoon, who knows what they'll do. I was pretty sure that they would include her just for the younger demographic.

After all, you could argue that since everyone remembers Dawn being there, that the monks that created the memories not only created the memories but changed the reality. Perception is reality, so if they were telling the high school stories from today's point of view, she would be there. Wow, what a concept!

I don't know how they will treat the cartoon in terms of continiuity. I can't imagine that they will require us to watch the cartoon show to understand what is going on with the live-action. But there is bound to be crossover.

[Highlander II: i wanna know what the characters are gonna look like, and if they're gonna bring in Spike and Dru and Darla and such]

If they have Angel, they will have to have them.

right - the monks could have had more 'influence' than we know of - and, yeah they could bring Dawn in, but i get the feeling that not too many ppl like her -

not only that - but too many characters, and they'll overcrowd the cast---

oh -let's hope that the Buffy fans won't be required to see the cartoon to 'understand' the storylines of the live-action show -

i'd almost wager that the cartoon would be the High School life, but would be 'all the stories that weren't shown on the l/a show' - ya know - it's the same deal, but it's the 'other' stories - the ones we haven't heard yet --

[obcooke: If they have Angel, they will have to have them.]

that is assuming they're gonna follow any form of canon -

ya know - that Angel and Darla and Dru and Spike were a 'family' (in a twisted demented way, but a family) and would be together-ish -

another thing - according to canon - Angel didn't even learn about Buffy until that day he went to LA and saw her talking to her first watcher (whose name completely escapes me at present) --

Spike and Dru are kind of larger than life caricatures (at least in Season 2) so they'd make great cartoons. They'll probably have them in for entertainment value (Spike's one-liners etc.) if nothing else.

APRIL 2002 BUFFY MAGAZINE issue #2 DRAWN TO THE SLAYER Whether she's kicking vampire but or frolicking with new beau Spike,Buffy Summers is usally a pretty animated gal. And the character will get animated in a whole new way in the Fall of 2002, when Buffy animated is expected to debut.
Buffy the animated is expected to feature the voices of the entire Buffy cast and will take place during buffys high school years -back when problems on the hellmouth had to contend with tests, boys, and shoes for the slayers attention."the animated series will tell stories that fit in with the shows current mythology but were never told on the live action series. "It's going to be an amazing show"Steven DeKnight told BBC buffy cult .It's funny,It's exciting. It's all the huge gigantic action that we can't do in a live action show- the sky's the limit. So we do the cool high school stories that we could'nt tell back in high school .Plus, it's the return to the classic Buffy, the way it all started, with the teenagers and high jinks. "it's going to be amazing"

No SMG for Buffy Animated Series :(

www.scifi.com/scifiwire reports that Buffy herself will likely not be reprising her role as everybody's favourite slayer for the forthcoming animated series. Although, on the brighter side, she doesn't say that it will never happen, so maybe we can keep our fingers crossed.

Gellar Opts Out Of Buffy Toon

Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar told SCI FI Wire that she has chosen not voice her character in Joss Whedon's proposed Buffy: The Animated Series. "I don't know anything about the animated series," Gellar said in an interview. "I'm not part of that. It says that I am [on the Internet], but the first I heard of it was last week."

Gellar added that she does not know who would voice the animated Buffy. Gellar has played the Slayer for six years in the live-action series, which started on The WB and now airs on UPN.

[Hey, Tab, I took the liberty of merging your post into the mainstream Buffy, the Animated Series discussion. Thanks for the new info, we'll be looking for who does get to play the voice of Buffy. - OB-Wan, Your Friendly Neighborhood Moderator]

[slayerette: hey, OBCOOKE! what's up??? miss ya!!!]

Oh, I just took a break for the weekend, nice of you to notice.

Come to think of it, Joss is building quite an empire. Sadly, TV, at least in the US, tends to copy itself. Since "Law & Order" is such a big draw, there are now a half-dozen versions of it, or so it seems. And networks compete for David Kelly's [a Dublin import] new shows (Ally McBeal, The Practice, LA Law, Picket Fences, etc.).

Fortunately, Joss doesn't seem to copy himself too much. But if his new shows succeed he will certainly be given more chances to grow to the limits of his time and energy.

UPN Tuesday - Buffy

WB Sunday - Angel

Fox ??? - Buffy, the Animated Series

Fox ??? - Firefly

Yep, quite an empire. His momma must be proud.

ahem - are you poking at L&O?? am I gonna have to be argumentative girl again?

there are 3 different L&O shows - The "Mothership" - (classic L&O - which needs a new boatload of writers, btw); L&O: SVU - one of the best, and L&O: CI (Criminal Intent) - which I haven't really gotten into yet ----

however - there are several shows that try to be similar to L&O and fail --- but I won't get into that here --

and Joss DOES copy himself - I've seen several eps of Angel w/ VERY similar storylines to eps of BTVS -----

Good, I just mentioned it as an example of the proliferation of IMHO a mediocre show. Instead of arguing, let's just agree to disagree.

[Highlander II: and Joss DOES copy himself]

I didn't say that he didn't. I said, "Fortunately, Joss doesn't seem to copy himself too much." Many, many decades of debate have taught me to rarely speak in absolutes. Almost every principle you can name has an exception.

[Tabitha:I couldn't find the proper thread - I was kinda hoping you would merge it!]

No prob, Tab, that's what we're here for. You mean a "God Like Member" had trouble finding a thread? hee, hee.

Well, I am only the default "God Like" because I can't think of anything else to write in that bit...
I must have been having a stupid day - i put "Buffy animated" in the search engine and everything, probably spelt it wrong or summat.

Highlander II's quote from tvtome at the top of this thread must be wrong or something - I thought that site usually had pretty reliable info, why would they report that if SMG didn't even know nothing about it?

I wonder if SMG will end up doing the voice anyway.
I can't see that it would really take up that much of one's time, especially if it is a character you have been playing for 6 years.

What does the 'dublin import' bit mean? Is he irish? Or am I just being stupid again?

Just another thought following on from the above quote - do you think they perhaps shot/drew a pilot? Or are there just some articles out there that are plain well wrong?
I know H2 is having some issues with people believing everything they read on the net, so I'm sorry if my last post got your goat Usually things that are speculation are signposted that way, as far as I can tell - certainly they were with the various Britney/Buffy rumours. I do try to take things with a grain of salt, but sometimes I just get over-excited about the implications

I came across a little bit more info from This Website
The article 's source is apparently "Cinescape", but I have no idea that that means, so I can't infer any reliability. It's a brief chat with Joss in which he mentions The Animated Series and also something about Ripper - which I will post in the appropriate thread. It was originally posted on June 11 FYI
Quote:
He also tamped down rumors that the BUFFY animated series had hit hard times, and may not happen, especially given Sarah Michelle Gellar’s quotes recently indicating she won’t be involved with the project.
“The animated series is going very well, but like everything else it takes so much longer than I would like,” Whedon said. “But we have about nine completed scripts, written by the BUFFY writers, and we have almost the entire cast signed on to do the voices … Sarah [Michelle Geller] and David [Boreanaz] are about the only cast members that can’t be in it, because they’re just too busy. Think of it as BUFFY: YEAR ONE. We’re going back to high school and telling the stories that we didn’t get to tell back then.”
That explains why there is no SMG - and adds David Boreanaz to the missing cast members.
