Exclamation Duration of a wormhole...

Have you ever noticed that the duration of a wormhole is very "adapted" to the number of travellers?

How does the gate "knows" if there would be 1,2 or 10 travellers and shuting down just after the travel??
I can understand that with the SGC and the computer which can stop the wormhole at anytime but with a DHD...how is it possible??

I you have a theory...

If you remember the technoblurb in 48 hours when Carter said that the patterns of the travellers were stored in the gate or the DHD crystals or something before reintegration?....perhaps the gate knows when all the patterns have been used and reformed and can shut itself off. Just a thought.

From what I have seen: total artistic license!!

There are SOME ways they can manually keep the gate open, like sticking something into the event horizon, but there are LOADS of examples where this is not done visibly, yet the gate stays open for minutes whilst they chat just in front of it, and it closes mere seconds after they have travelled through.

Perhaps some sort of proximity detection? At a store, a door will stay open for you as long as you stand near it. Once you move away, the door closes. It will also close after a prolonged period of time to save on air conditioning.

Hadn't thought of that, although I don't think it has been explicitly mentioned yet.

We HAVE had explicit references to keeping things in the event horizon to keep it going.

We have also been told that the gate can sense whether there is something inside the event horizon before the wormhole engages, and prevent it if there is (i.e. after burying the gate).

So, with those two examples we DO have, it would not be unrealistic for them to sense/detect presence near the gate.

Ah - this one they explain in the show!

[SPOILER - season 4 - "A Hundred Days"]

All to do with being buried by liquified Naquadah-rich soil, whilst the gate was still operational. The liquified naquadah formed a layer just outside the event horizon, not actually inside the event horizon, which presumably would have happened if the gate had not been active at the time.

um, remeber "WaterGate" from season 4, the water supplied power to the gate, but because of teh transmission from teh drone going through, it kept the gate active.... therefor if they want to keep a gate open they just send a signal through!

Hum...yes why not!
But if a signal is able to keep the gate open for an unlimited time, why does the goauld aren't able to keep a wormhole more than 38 minutes (wright?)
surely because the energy source wasn't enough powerful to keep the wormhole anylonger...

I like your theory but it was never proved in the show for aliens...

For humans, the GDO could be this "signal sender", don't u think?
and when the GDO pass the gate, it can shutdown because there is no more signal through it!

but it doesn't work for goaulds...so I like the "door's store theory" too, lol

Has anyone ever noticed that in Season 1, Daniel Jackson was standing before the Chappa'ai at the SGC, right next to the MALP. In the background, I could hear, "Chevron 6 engaged, Chevron 7..." and then the scene cut out. However, am I to assume that Thor somehow transported both Daniel and the MALP away before that little wormhole thingie exploded outward, and then wiped thier memories or something? I think that there was an error in that scene. Now I am off to post in that thread about sensing the Chappa'ai.
