Why didn't the Universal Translator work with the Breen?

This has always puzzled me, why didn't the Universal Translator work with the Breen?

The UT is not totally reliable and the Breen face mask corrupted the unintelligible sounds?

Never puzzled me, it made the much Breen cooler That's why! Plain and simple.

I cannot come up with an excuse for it, certainly not now we see how the very primitive UT works minor miracles on 'Enterprise'.

maybe something to do with the breen brain rendered the ut useless? i know empathic abilities of betazoids also did not work with the breen. i don't know if an actual reason was ever given for either.

That's a good answer.

Betazoids cannot read Ferengi minds either, but the UT will work on those. That doesn't mean that Ferengi and Breen minds work the same way of, course, just an observation to consider.
