The Neo Program.

No, not that Neo! LOL.

This is the 'Near Earth Object' Program!

We are talking 'Deep Impact' and 'Armageddon' for real!

This is a web-based monitoring system called 'Sentry' which you can visit at http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/index.html

Developed over the past two years by NASA, it is a database which uses information collected by Astronomers to give a risk value to near-Earth objects.

The 36 greatest risks are listed here http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/risk/

The program hopes that should any large object be heading our way, it will give us at least 10 years warning.

It doesn't say what they are going to do when they find one!

While the chances of a collision with an asteroid big enough to destroy mankind in our lifetime is almost zero, the probability of a collision in the next 50 years with an asteroid big enough to cause a 5km crater is only 160 : 1.

I find that very unsettling! :crying: Thanks Dave (I guess, now that I will lay awake wondering) ;0( Only kidding, if its going to happen I really would rather not know if there is nothing we can do about it. Would you want to know if the End of the World is coming and what would you do differently?

I wouldn't want to know, but if I found out for sure it was coming to an end, I would quit my job. Move to the mountains and live off the land and commune with nature in my final days, something I always wished I could do. Terribly boring but I think that I would find the peace within to be able to handle the magnitude of such an event without going crazy. Just MHO. How about you?
