Dwarves.

Hey! Skip started a thread on Elves, I wanted a thread on Dwarves. Dwarves are much cooler than Elves.

Not the stupid 'Disney' Dwarves, Tolkien's Dwarves are tough, strong, laborious, brave, and hardworking. They are a proud and stubborn lot, yet they toil endlessly in their duties often jealously hoping to better their peers, yet well aware of their place within the strict dwarven society. Miners of great skill they are adapted to working underground, but may also be found living in hilly or mountainous regions. They like the earth and dislike the sea.

They are a private, often secretive, people, and have only the occasional interaction with neighboring cultures. And lets face it who would want to associate with Elves?

Mistakenly thought by others to be dour and taciturn, they simply care little for the humour of Elves and Men. They enjoy beer, ale, mead and even stronger drink. Their chief love, however, is precious metals, paticularly gold. they also enjoy gems, of course, particularly those of opaque nature (except pearls which they do not like) and diamonds. Also of stone and things that take shape under the hands of craftsmen rather than things that live by their own life.

Considering that their women tend to be bearded to, it is not surprising that some Dwarves are somewhat forward in their behaviour towards females not so adorned.

If Dwarves are a trifle suspicious and avaricious, they generally make up for such faults by their courage and tenacity.

Their own secret 'inner' names , their true names, the Dwarves have never revealed to any one of alien race. Not even on their tombs do they inscribe them.

Yep, Dwarves are much cooler than Elves.
As for the disney ones, I read somewhere that C.S. Lewis took Tolkien to see snow white and the seven dwarves, because he knew about Tolkiens aversion to a movie adaption of The Hobbit. Needless to say, Tolkien was horrified about what might have happened to his Dwarves in a movie

Dwarven women only account for less than a third of the entire race and not all of them marry and have children, so the race does not grow very fast.

They also have much better drinking sings than the other races

Hopefully said drinking songs would nto be 'gold gold gold gold gold gold'?

Dwarves really are kewl. And they DO have taste, be it slightly different from ours. They see beauty in the nature of rock features, and just look at how they see the mirromere!

....Though I do still like elves (and NOT for Legolas' sake, or OB's)... *snicker*

Dwarves are pretty funky, I'll give you that, they make some pretty funky stuff outta metal. Melikes their ability to just keep on going when they so very very tired...and they sense of family too...

But Y'all know me well enough now to know I love and will always love the Elves, and ya not just cos of Legolas or OB, but Elves is very natureloving.

Funky

I'm reading Terry Pratchett Guards! Guards!, there is a little about Dwarves in it, which is what made me start this. He says "Dwarves have no place for Metaphor or Similie. Rocks are hard, darkness is dark."

I really like that and think it's true, Dwarves would 'call a spade a spade', they would 'tell you it to you straight', going directly to the mark.

"It was said by Gimli that there are few dwarf-women, probably no more than a third of the whole people. They seldom walk abroad except at great need. They are in voice and appearance, and in garb if they must go on a journey, so like to the dwarf-men that the eyes and ears of other peoples cannot tell them apart."

--Appendix A, Return of the King.

So does anyone know any dwarven drinking songs, other than "Gold, gold, gold, gold." They can be funky songs if you like!
"Hi Ho, Hi Ho, It's off to work we go." is banned though!

DWARVES ARE'NT FUNKY!

Dwarves don't wear medallions, or have permed hair, or wear Hawaiian T-shirts, or leave their shirts unbuttoned, and they don't disco dance.

If you want to talk funky start a new thread!!!
