Well, I put non-peroxide highlights (so they would wash out after a few weeks) in my hair a couple of times two or three years ago just as an experiment, but it just took too much to keep it up, so I don't do that anymore.

The first thing is, I'm glad that I'm well ahead of the game in relation to my mom, whose hair started turning when she was fifteen years old. Although it was the most interesting thing. I was standing behind her a couple of days ago and discovered that she still has a few strands of her original color - I've been teasing her about it since.

The second thing is, the strands that are coming in are coming in white, as opposed to gray. This is the same as my mom's hair, and she always gets compliments on how pretty her hair is. So if I can manage to get the color she has (which seems likely, as our original hair color is very similar), I'll be quite happy.

Maybe it's because my looks have never been that great (I have that round German face even when I lose weight, and my eyes get all scrunched up when I laugh). On the other hand, I guess I have an advantage in that people generally think I'm around thirty or thirty-five (which mystifies me; I'm 47 and I think I look every day of my age). But I've never understood why people get so vain about their looks. It's like the quote from "The Little Prince": "What is essential, is invisible to the eye." It's great if a person is good-looking, but it certainly isn't the most important thing.

Re: Vanity shock

I've lost 30 pounds in the last year and a half. I'm 5'10 1/2" and weighed 203 pounds a year ago Christmas. I'm now about 172 pounds. Even at 200 pounds people called me skinny, but it was all around my waist and it hurt to buckle my pants. I credit my weight loss to two things. The company I work for laid off half of its employees, so I have to work twice as hard, and the food supplements I'm taking. I still eat like a pig. In fact I ate a 14" pepperoni and sausage pizza in about 20 minutes on Saturday, so to hell with low carb diets. Good luck to you all.

Pizza is good - at least it has all four of the basic food groups in it. Still, a 14" inch pizza is a lot for one person, isn't it? The other day I bought a personal-size pizza for lunch (6", I think), and I couldn't even eat all of that.
