Question Songs for Lord of the Rings

Skip confessed her disapointment that few of the songs that are eluded to in the book are not present in the film. Particularly Elven ones.

What songs could we put in?

My offerings are:-

Elvish:-
Ave Maria,
Ar Bydd a Herraeth (best trans. World of Heart and Soul)
Ar Hyd y Nos (lit. All through the Night)
Taps

Dwarvish:-
Sospan Fach (lit. Little Saucepan. Nothing to do with Dwarves but a dashed rousing scrummage song.)

Any more?

Please forgive my use of the Welsh titles.

But they are pretty ropey in English and lose a lot of the meaning.

If I had a hammer (but more likely 'If I had a ham..)
oh Sammy (Danny) boy!

Sauron:
Eye of the tiger

Sauraman:
Eye of tiger.... claw of newt, tail of bat...... (sorry...)

That's a little harsh.

If you can put a tune to them, the songs in the book do help put character to the races. Having said that, I agree that there is too much singing by the third or fourth reading, and the words are difficult to put meaning to.

For my money I tend to put Hobbit songs with simple, down to earth 'Folk' tunes. Elvish, I always think of soprano's and aria's.

I really like the Dwarven song in the begining of The Hobbit that tells the history of the Lonely Mountain... nothing else in the sereis matches it.

Just for you I've started reading the book AGAIN & this time am forcing myself to read the songs...I did the first time I read it 10 years ago, that's why I didn't bother .

Don't blame me!

Besides, I always used to try and match a tune to the words e.g. Bilbo's walking song I put with the 'Keeper' (just about)

In my mind all the hobbit songs seem to have the same tune - a kinda hoppy folk jingle...the elvish songs are quite solemn but not slow, and the dwarvish songs are gruff and deep - Tom Bombadils songs are very merry and I always sing them out loud!
