The Lord of the Rings is the definitive history of Middle Earth, and I guess at least 70% of the population have read it at some point. The other 30 soon will. I daresay The Hobbit isn't far behind.

But who has read the other books?

The Silmarillion in particular offers a historical starting point for the whole story

I read the Hobbit first and enjoyed it. Then I read the Lord of the Rings, after that the Hobbit never seemed as interesting.

Also read the Simarillion and some other works. They definetly provide a historical view. However the Lord of the Rings will always be my favorite and it is the one I have read the most.

I have read the Hobbit but not the Silmarillion. What is that about?

I want to read the Adventures of Tom Bombadil and i want to get a map of Middle-Earth to put on my wall. They sell 'em in WH Smith, but I have never seen Bombadil in any bookshops or libraries.

The Silmarillion is about how Middle Earth and that world was created and the history of it up to the hobbit and LOTR. A lot of the important events are each a chapter or more and each are little stories all tied together. I think that's it, its been a few years since I read it.

I've read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings more times than I can keep count... I've also read The Silmarillion and a number of the other books like The Book of Lost Tales, Farmer Giles, Father Christmas Letters, etc. I'm about to start working on The History of Middle-earth series...

Just to clarify, the Silmarillion is a collection of stories from the first age of Middle Earth and some of the second age. (Back in the time of the first dark lord of Mordor when Sauron was just an apprentice and the Elves were at the height of there power.) (Lord of the rings was the third age)

The other book worth reading is the Unfinished Tales. Gives all sorts of extended history to people and events in Lord of the Rings.
