A New Hope

[red-cheeked rant]
No it wasn't called this!!

The very first Star Wars film was called "Star Wars". It was marketed as Star Wars - it was called Star Wars - it said Star Wars on the trailer, on the movie posters, and on the merchandising!

The only place it said "A New Hope" was in the Flash Gordon intro titles!!

But that doesn't matter! It was called "Star Wars"!!
[/red-cheeked rant]

Or was it?

Re: A New Hope

You're in the odd position of being wrong and right at the same time...
...of course the tite of the first movie was Star Wars and that was for two motives...

a) it had to form a link in most of the viewers' minds with the grand encompassing background of galactical strife that it presented (STAR WARS!
just let the words float a bit in your mind...gosh! THEY DO STICK IN!)

b) In case the film was a flop (and there was reason to fear it...think at the
fate of most sci-fi films in the 70s.....) there would have been NO sequels
and it would have remained a solitary standing stone (that's the reason too
for the 'apparently' self fulfilling end scene).

So, the title of the 1st movie IS Star Wars but in the lucasian argot (remember that the dude craved for having the chance of filming the sequels
and it went onward even when it appeared that the means and time to realize the thrid installment would have been much stricter and limited than
he hoped for...that explains for the silly puppetry of Jabba's Palace...thank
goodness they later substituted that Sy Snootles mannequin with a passable
effect...and the fact that the planned Kashykk slave work planet was turned
into endor -bad tolkenian pun- with the ewoks on it instead of the wookiees
-ewok/wookiee another pun-), it would be much more correct to call it ANH.

As for me I call it Star Wars when talking to mom, sis and my friends who are not 'deeply' into that as I am (i.e. 'normal' people), and ANH with my fellow
SW geeks.
