they keep dying b/c you can only have the same argument so many times -- Spike is better than Riley - but not only on just the 'looks' front - Spike is a much more interesting character. While Riley had that 'sneaky' Initiative bit going on, he still was 'clean cut' American-bred, mama's boy (well, he coulda been a daddy's boy, but it doesn't really matter). Riley was flat - and Spike's description of him as "Captain Cardboard" was right in more ways than just that insult. Riley had no depth - we learned everything there was to learn about Iowa-farm-boy in the first 4 episodes he was in. Spike, OTOH, has so much more depth. There is still, after all these seasons, so much about him we DON'T know. He was evil - yeah, and he wasn't so evil as a human - but we don't know everything - b/c he doesn't tell anyone anything - well, not so much. He's mysterious - and he's shown that way from the beginning. He's brash and harsh and wants to hit stuff, but there's also mystery to him. Not to mention he's a creature of the night. He's much more fun to watch run around w/ his blanket smoking than Riley is just walking in the sunlight. Spike - deep; Riley - flat. The writers have a great deal to do with that too - but that's a whole other bit...

dunno - character sections are harder to keep going - esp b/c of spoiler issues -- much of the character discussion - esp of Spike, recently, is happening in the S7 section -- start up something - might get more ppl here - but, from my understanding, these are the hard ones to keep busy - anyway -- Spike still rules heads above Riley ---

Strangely enough, after re-watching seasons 4 and 5 I liked Riley more this time through. It was interesting to see his clean-cut image slip as he got lost in his love for Buffy. And to end up getting bitten for kicks and looking for attention because he realised what we all knew... Buffy didn't love him, didn't need him. I got more sympathy for the guy this time through. Still agree that he had nowhere near as much depth as Spike does though...

I still don't like the guy very much but (Killer In Me spoiler) - i have to give kudos to him for his one indirect line in last nights ep - The leader of the soldiers waves the men's guns down as he addresses Buffy "He indicated you might be needing our assistance. We're to provide you with anything you need to help ass-face here." The leader motions towards Spike as Buffy looks at him a little pi**ed. "Those were his exact words, Ma'am." It made me giggle when i read Leoff's Wildfeed so i think that little moment is what i like about Riley ![]() xxx

ok, i don't know if i mentioned this here somewhere already, or if this is just a conversation i had with my sister. in retrospect i guess i don't hate riley as much. ( don't hit me!) in watching my dvd's i got for christmas of season 4 i realized i missed a few episodes originally. i think if i had seen the one where riley keeps going to willow to figure out how to win buffy over ( i think it was 5.07????) i think i might not have hated him as strongly.
