(You've seen more of these episodes than me), but I think that Trip is the Chief Engineer. That's why he has to stay behind "With his Engines" in 'Fight or Flight'. And there is no good reason for him to be on the bridge anyway. Merryweather is the 'pilot', although I don't remember them actually calling him that. Now, he ought to be somewhere near the front, don't you think, so he can see where they are going? I don't think they have a first or second officer. T'Pol acts as if she is, but she is 'science advisor' or something, 'busybody' maybe!

In the season premiere we found out that T'Pol's vulcan rank outranked Trip's earth rank. Therefore T'Pol is the first office. The one in command when Archer is not available. Trip is the second officer, but also the chief engineer. Reed is the weapons officer and in charge of security. I think the interaction between T'Pol and Trip was very good. T'Pol is learning how to work with these humans. Although she is really working to control her emotions at times. That Vulcan captain was insulting. If you are invited to dinner you don't usually eat before going. And just what did he say to T'Pol?

sorry - i seem to have misplaced my Vulcan-English dictionary -- okay - i was thinking Trip was the Engineer - but he's never in Engineering - that's probably what confused me --- and i agree - if Merryweather is the 'pilot' or 'helmsman' why isn't his station in front of the viewer? (which sort of functions as a windshield/front window) -- tho, i was very pleased with this episode - T'Pol playing nice, and Archer actually listening to her and taking her advice - if they are gonna be a 'crew' then they should work together - not at cross purposes --

and, ya know what? if they are and they focus on it too much - i give up and i'll stop watching -- forced shippy stuff irritates the heck out of me --- my opinion? don't force it - just write and if it turns out that way, fine, but don't then make the relationship the central focus of the show or the show will die -- believe me! i've seen it happen far more times than i can count ---- argh - just write ST plots and don't worry about the 'soap opera' stuff - if it's there it'll come out in the subtle background stuff -- argh!! <end rant>

that was what i was thinking - but wasn't sure --- and, of course, they may not have it really structuralized yet either - oh - and i figured out why T'Pol looked so familiar to me (i know i didn't mention it, but it was in the back of my head bugging me!) - she was on an episode of JAG - she was an elisted Marine and she wanted to be an officer, but she wouldn't take a photo of the tattoo on her rearend, so her CO wouldn't send her papers - and she was fighting it, but in the end, she took a photo and her CO tore it up and didn't look at it - he was trying to prove a point to her - that he wasn't gonna give her special treatment b/c she was a female - which she, finally, understood -- she looked a LOT different - her hair was almost a strawberry blond - and she wore a marine uniform - kinda weird ---- okay - i'm done --

This was a very good character episode--- I learned a lot about T'Pol-- she's growing on me some. She's done a very brave thing, I believe, in calling off the betrothal. I don't believe Vulcans go too much for that "indivuality" thing--even in Spock's time if I remember. They are very duty and tradition bound--just the way their society has worked out it's violent heritage. And I'm not so sure about women's rights on Vulcan--at least at this time. I think there was something about if a bride makes a challenge during the wedding cerimony and the chosen "champion" loses; she then becomes the "property" of her husband (?) That can't be good! And what happens if she calls it off totally? As far as the Vulcan captain--well, I thought he was a jerk. Rude. You don't go around speaking a language no one else understands, especially if you are a guest of the people who don't understand--they need a lesson in etiquette if you ask me. And why--*why* follow us around? I'm glad Archer didn't accept their help at first-I would've done the same thing. But T'Pol was right too---you can be too proud and stubborn sometimes. ( Just a little human ranting here, forgive me) Trip is getting better, too. Being from the American south myself, I found his accent a little anoying at first; but less so as time goes on. A really sweet, intuitive guy, that one! I love pecan pie, too; lol. Nice touch at the end. Over all I give it a 4 out of a possible 5. Stormwarch

i completely agree, Neo -- it annoys me that writers/producers etc assume that they HAVE to include a romance between major characters just b/c the fans demand it -- it's completely unnecessary most of the time and totally out of place in Trek - they tried it w/ Riker and Troi - (though they did establish a pre-existing relationship w/ them so it worked a little better) - and Worf and Dax (this was one of my least fave storylines of DS9) -- the 'romance' thing is just terribly annoying and detracts from the true 'nature' of the show - just stick to Trek action and such, PLEASE! i could rant about this forever - but, i'll stop now -- and i'll keep enjoying Trek and all my other fandoms and such ---

I don't think we have to worry-- T'Pol is a Vulcan--female, yes, but still a Vulcan. They didn't do it with Spock and he was part human. I think a friendship would be nice and good for her though. Remember too; she thinks we all smell. I agree with you all though; keep it true to the point of the series, exploration. (Of the space kind)! I liked the Worf / Dax relationship though--but I kind of had a crush on Worf myself! Tucker is very cute, but he reminds me of my nephew a little. He needs a cute *human* female. However, how do they handle -- ummm, Pon Farr?? Oooops, I don't think I'll think about that now; I'll just be surprised. I'm sure it'll be handled "logically". SW
