It seems like most of ehr diagnosis are "I don't know" or "I'm not sure". Granted, most of the time it's due to an alien entity that she's never seen before, but she should still be able to make some sort of educated guess based on the other alien organisms she's encountered inside the bodies of SG personell.

Hi Zach,

I think it is due to her scientific training that she says "I don't know" so much... but her observations she is SURE of but not about some of the other things... In Upgrades... "Season 4" she was very sure of her diagnoises....

Maybe she is not totally a medical doctor. She certainly seems to take part in some of the non-medical stuff: e.g. keeping an eye on Jack as he builds the energy source in Fifth Race, and so on.

They "let" her do a lot of stuff which should be well outside her remit and scope.

Well, he was behaving very oddly, was building something strange, and had lost the ability to speak english...makes sense to me that they would want to have base medical monitor him.

Well, she is dealing with alien stuff, from offworld. Something tells me they didn't teach her all that in med school!

Several times she also helps Sam with purely technical stuff, when no medical issues are involved at all. And she certainly seems to have a significant knowledge of those technical areas. It is hard enough to keep up to date on medical knowledge as a doctor, without filling up the synapses with weird sci-fi as well!

I think in practice it is the writers wanting someone for Sam to bounce her ideas off, and allow the monologue of explanation, without it needing to be George, Jack, Teal'c or Daniel.

Maybe, her and Sam being close friends, they kinda teach other stuff? Or maybe Frasier started a degree in physics or science, but changed to bio science? I'm sure similarly, Sam has good medical training.
