Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz <snore> this one was a super sleeper -- kept quoting Willow from a couple eps back --"bored now" -- of course, i didn't have a 'puppy' to play with --- anyway -- severely lacking storyline - i know they were trying to get some Xander stuff going here -- but - this was NOT the way to do it - the only redeeming factor was the scene at the end where Xander talks that O'Toole guy into disarming the bomb -- other than that -- this ep was a complete downer ----

I loved this episode, it was a bit slow in places but the rest was great. Xander finally got something to do and by himself too. It had some funny lines too. The hellmouth b-plot didn't bother me, I think it was because it wasn't the main emphasis of the ep, just another 'normal' day for Sunnydale.

Watched this again last night (I'm going through all of S3) - And this ep still bothers me - it's like they tried to shoehorn a Xander being cool story into a 'OMG the hellmouth is opening' story - If they'd merged the two together or something - like the bomb needed to go off to close the hellmouth, or something -- I mean the way Xander talked O'Toole down was cool - and his brush off of Cordy was nice - but something about this just seemed like two separate stories that could have been split into two different episodes -- and it almost seemed too 'forced' that Buffy and co were concerned about Xander getting killed - he's been there before, helped and such, and didn't die - just b/c he got knocked out once doesn't mean that he's now completely useless -- Buffy was dead once, for crying out loud -- just doesn't fit - everyone was a little out of character on this one ---

Possibly the worst episode of season 3. It seemed like they were trying to shove 4 episodes worth of stuff into 1 episode. You've got the hellmouth opening, Xander and Faith having sex, a bomb in the school, dead guys walking around... the result is that all the story lines are rushed, and important things get pushed into the background. I agree with H2 about everyone pushing Xander out. Surely he would be safer actually knowing what's going on? And he has proved his worth before now, it's not like he's completely useless. One thing that really bugged me was the big demon thing that came out of the hellmouth. They said it had gotten bigger, so I'm presuming it was in season 1, but I really can't remember that. It just looked so fake! It had 3 teeny little mouths, it wasn't particularly fast - is that the worst the hellmouth has to offer? And exactly what did Giles do to it that was so brave? But I loved the scene at the end. Oz's line about feeling "oddly full today" - I didn't get it at first, but when I did get it, I thought it was hilarious. And Xander's brush-off of Cordelia was very satisfying. ![]()

The thing in the Hellmouth poked it's head out at the end of S1 when Buffy was fighting the Master... it was kinda little, so, it had gotten bigger, but yeah, it didn't really seem like that much of a threat. And, I just don't get it... Xander had helped and whacked vampires and demons around before, why, exactly, in THIS episode is he 'all of a sudden' not 'usefull' anymore? There just wasn't any *reason* for what was going on...

I liked this episode; it wasn't one of the best episodes of the season, but I didn't think that it was the worst. I, too, really liked Xander's speech to O'Toole and his brush-off of Cordelia. I also though that many of Xander's interactions with the zombies were very funny. However, I thought that the Hellmouth sub-plot seemed tacked-on and unnecessary. I also didn't like O'Toole's buddies, since they were very poorly-developed as characters (granted, they were only sidekicks, but I thought that they could have been more interesting).
