ah - another Buffy - b-day -- Spike and his poor box of chocolates -- Dawn: "I'm badder than you." Spike: "Are not." tho - have to say this is another of those "Buffy's being a b*tch' eps -- she goes and thrashes Spike for letting Dawn find out something that Spike didn't even know? b/c had he known what Dawn was, he might not have helped her -- but he didn't know - and Buffy wants to 'make herself feel better w/ a round of *kick the Spike*' --- grrr - sometimes she bugs me --- i understand why she was angry - but not why she was angry w/ Spike -- he could have let Dawn run off on her own to break in -- might have had a different ending there -----

My favorite moment in this episode is when Dawn gives Buffy the picture of them framed by seashells they picked on the beach. It is so neat to see everyone's reaction to this sweet, sentimental gift about an event THAT NEVER HAPPENED! It's a perfect gift from a loved one but everyone, including the viewer, is made uncomfortable by the secret knowledge that only Dawn still believes in her past. It makes the destruction of her imaginary journals later even more poignant. A very low-key, underplayed but exceptional moment.

i agree -- very underplayed -- but very touching -- a lot of stuff about Dawn gets missed - b/c she's shadowed by The Slayer --- most siblings can usually handle dealing w/ big sis or big bro getting some attn they think they should have -- but when big sis is the Slayer? that's gotta be an added stressor -- brings up that old line from the Brady Bunch - 'Marcia, Marcia, Marcia' -- i have a feeling that Dawn probably feels a lot like Jan did --- everyone's so focused on Buffy that they wouldn't even noticed if she ran off -- mini-spoiler for Crush when you watch this - Joyce doesn't really worry about Dawn not being home until Buffy gets home -- why? where does she think Dawn is?
