Server Maintenance

Over the next couple of weeks...there will be an onslaught of new worms that will be attempting to affect servers worldwide.

I will be doing my best to keep up with it...I Promise that!

I will be at Gatecon Thursday thru Monday. I will be in Nevada for a couple of days after that. I will have my remote admin computer (notebook) with me. So, I will be doing my best to monitor the server. I am unsure if the pager workes in Vancouver
(it lets me know if the server goes down) If for some reason, It is down for more than an hour..call the convention hotel and have "GeekMan" paged. I will let the hotel know ahead of time about the possibility of someone needing to get ahold of me. I do not expect there to be any issues...but, I do not like to take chances. On Wed. September 19, 2001 the server will be going offline to the members so I can do a thorough backup. It should only take less than an hour. This will allow me to restore the site from Vancouver if something were to happen.
If you have any questions or concerns...feel free to post a reply.

Server Updates

Just to give everyone a "heads up"

On 10.29.01 between 02:00-03:00 Zulu, scheduled maitenance will occur on Ausgates Server. During this time, you may notice a speed drop. The server may need to be restarted a couple of times as well. Anyone that is on the site at the time will get a 10 minute advance warning before restart. All collected items will be safe.

Regrettably members the Reetou Diplomatic Corp. are not fully conversant with Earth US Military jargon.

Could you perhaps translate? I am guessing that "Zulu" means either "local time" or G.M.T., which appears to be the earth standard time reference.

GMT (US EST +5 I think). Just to give you an idea how weird Afghanistan is, they're 8 1/2 hours ahead of US EST. 1/2 hr? Is that so they can be out of synch with the rest of the world by 600 years and 30 minutes?

Standard Daylight Savings
Time Time
Atlantic
Eastern EST EDT
Central CST CDT
Mountain MST MDT
Pacific PST PDT
Alaska ALA
Hawaii HAW

Standard time:
GMT ATL EST CST MST PST ALA HAW
difference -4 -5 -6 -7 -8 -9 -10

Summertime (Daylight savings time) for those states that observe daylight savings time. For those that do not, use the standard time table all year:
GMT EDT CDT MDT PDT
difference -4 -5 -6 -7

Example:

Right now, it is 9AM in London, UK 0
4AM in Virginia, US -5
3AM in Wisconsin -6
1AM in California -8
8PM in Sydney, Australia +11

and for the curious:

1:30PM in Afghanistan +4:30

I hope this doesn't cause more confusion..

Surely US EST = GMT -5, rather than the vice versa suggested ?? :rolly2:

But thank you all for the explanation of Earth time zones.

NB. The Reetou Embassy is based in the UK, so we can relate already to GMT/BST.

i understand timezones, and ZULU, and such --

but what i DON'T understand is the 30minutes - why is Afghan 8 1/2 hours ahead?? that is the WEIRDEST thing --- how does that even work??? are they between timezones, or something? not quite in the one before and not quite in the one after??? and, is that the only country that does that??
