Re: Did you cry? (be honest) I remember crying during Moulin Rouge..... Crying out - "Hunt down and kill Baz Luhrmann!!" (This line was partially stolen from the late great Bill Hicks. His joke was done on a radio station in America where he declared a competition to the listeners, to hunt down and kill Billy Ray Cyrus! Genius.) I see Baz got the Alexander film based on my favourite series by Valerio Massimo Manfredi. Yahweh, from time to time, tried his hand at stand up comedy.

Re: Did you cry? (be honest) Silent Running did make me cry along with scene with Frodo's farewell in ROTK. A.I. did the same to me, with all the soppiness...sigh. It is good for you to cry sometimes, clears out the tear ducts.. ![]()

Direction I won't speculate on, but performance I will. I don't really care for Mathew Broderick's style but in this movie his character just seemed "right" to me. On the other hand, I still can't get that whole scene set off by Denzel's lines out of my head: "TEAR IT UP! TEAR IT UP!" Might just be me but I thought it was great. | |

Re: Did you cry? (be honest) Something about Glory was the sense that black people in America wanted to fight for the Union North because they were the only people who stood for Truth, Justice, and the American Way - that "Freedom" only ever wore a dark blue jacket. That to myself seemed very much like backwards writing - the way most cultures do after they win anything, then justify it retrospectively, as unionised America seemed to do here. That's what I meant about American sentiment. Amistrad was good, but again - how does someone from an entirely alien culture learn the word "Freedom" first? American sentiment again. Amistrad is still an under-rated film, though.

Re: Did you cry? (be honest) I cried at ROTK. A movie that doesn't move me to tears passes out of remembrance very quickly. But hey, I teared up several times watching finding nemo, so I guess that doesn't say a lot, does it...

Re: Did you cry? (be honest) Kneeling down to the hobbits was a biggie, as was the super gloppy and extra sentimental meeting between Frodo and the gang at the end. "Cuddles with Sam" and all. However, it was the scene where Gandalf took Pippen away from Merry that really got to me. Merry was so hurt and angry and terrified at the same time, while Pippen kept screaming Merry's name. Then when they reunited on the battlefield I bawled so loudly that I got shushed. It was odd, because none of the romances in the film moved me the slighest bit. I was completely irritated with Aragorn for going with well-dressed princess elf girl Arwen (who rides a horse well) instead of butt-kicking, blade-in-hand, went-into-battle-even-though-you-rejected-her-jerk Eowen (who killed a Ring Wraith!) Sheesh. It was the dynamic between Merry and Pippen that did the most for me. Legolas is pretty, but Merry and Pippen brought on the tears. Then again, Bram Stoker's Dracula causes hysterics, as do Mary Reilley, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, The Crow, and Donnie Darko. I have issues. Lucifer.

Re: Did you cry? (be honest) I've always been a big weeper at the movies, but I was so keyed up for so long before seeing the LOTR movies that I just didn't have it in me by the time I actually saw them. There were, certainly, many highly emotional lump-in-the-throat moments, and every time I listen to the soundtrack CDs, which is often, it all comes back. I love every soppy sentimental moment of the last part of ROTK from Frodo waking in the Houses of Healing right on to Sam closing the door at the very end. What can I say, I am totally a sucker for that sort of thing. Also, the whole innocence and pastoral beauty of the Shire thing plucks at my heart strings like I was a musical instrument. And Smeagol and Deagol peacefully and happily fishing in their little green paradise, that is a definitely a lump-in-the-throat moment, knowing what is to come immediately afterward!
