Cool

Its been a while since I read this book but its the one that got me hooked.

This obviously explains in some part about Harry and his route to Hogwarts school, his family 'Life' plus how he got his scar. I recommend anyone to read this.

i will probably be the odd one out in this forum because I found Harry Potter incredibly boring. I read about 60 pages of the first book and there was just nothing there for me, yes it was quick paced (kiddy style) but nothing really happened per se. I guess i must be somehow missing it with everyone else loving it but i think i will stick to the adult books

It was thanks to my sister giving me this book that I carried on reading the rest of them that she's got

A very good book indeed!

Just finished it (in about 3 evenings Loved the story, though it was obviously written for younger readers. I'm assuming the later ones get a bit darker.

A lot darker as Harry and his friends mature.

Re: Book1 : Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone.

Don't worry Padders, I didn't get HP until the sixth book came out! I did try and read the first when it was published, but felt it was rather boring and too kiddie. I liked the later books much better when I was finally persuaded to read them when book 6 was just about to be published. Then I met my bf who's quite the fan, not enough to get up at midnight to buy the book, but certainly he's bought the last three on the day of publication. So I read them all before book 6, and pulled an all-nighter with that, even if it wasn't quite as good as some of the others. I read book 7 on Saturday (my bf was lovely enough to give it to me to read first, knowing that I read about twice as fast as he does) and now I'm re-reading the older books in order. Read both 1 and 2 yesterday...

On the second re-read, it was much better than I remembered. The foreshadows of dark things to come can be seen if you look hard enough.

Re: Book1 : Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone.

Been a while since I read it. Philosopher's Stone is the only Potter book I've read. I thought it was nice and readable, if simplistic. The only surprise was the traitor-teacher, whose name I forget.

I disliked the ending. I thought it was bolted on because in magic land the goodies never lose. I know it's for kids, but why not let Slytherin[sp] win the House Cup? Harry et al. saved the day and did the right thing.

Hmm. Maybe I should read the others. I'm in two minds about it.

I was surprised at how much I loved the book. I like the simple, easy style of writing and although I had seen the movie before I read the book, I still found the book to be interesting.

I never really liked the first one, I am ashamed to admit. But thank god I read it, cause the ones that follow are well worth it.

Re: Book1 : Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone.

Ashamed?

Bit strong, though there are some who think Potter is a triumph of branding over substance. (I've only read the first so am not qualified to comment on the series as a whole. Philosopher's Stone itself isn't a classic).
