The Egyptian stargate was buried after a rebellion a few thousand years ago, almost before human civillisation on earth had moved from hunter-gatherer to pastoral whatevers that go next... Now, without spoilering too much, it is safe to say we have seen dozens of examples of cultures which are human in origin, and seem to be based on earth religions or myths that Daniel can relate to. Question: did these cultures miraculously develop in parallel, or have the goa'uld been visiting by hatak (or other method) to steal people, religions and cultures, after the gate was buried at Giza? [And of course, other alien races doing the same... eg Asgard]

the cultures that aren't still influenced by the goa'uld cling to the beliefs that everyone around them believes. in some cases the goa'uld left and never came back, in others, yes, they do visit by ha'tac just so say "i still control you,". a second stargate (s1 solitudes) was brought 2 earth to re-instate goa'uld rule.. i think. since the first stargate was buried and rendered inactive, the goa'uld brought a new one that would pick up any earth-bound wormholes. i dont know what happened there. the only reason goa'uld took people through the stargate was for slaves. once they had enough i dont think they'd come back for more.

There is strong evidence in many episodes that suggests the the Goa'uld were on Earth as late as 10th-11th century A.D. ('Demons', for one). But I have a slightly bigger question: why did they leave? Earth would have been a perfect planet for them, with plenty of hosts, and apparently it is (or was) a fair way away from other inhabited planets (can't remember which ep I heard that in.) Raptor

Sensible points. To continue the theorising: the basic premise (at least of the film) was that Ra was the last active goa'uld on Earth, though a second gate was available and typically would have been used. Conversely, despite evidence of its continued use, the use of a gate in somewhere as remote and hostile as Antarctica is unlikely, given the goa'uld firepower, arrogance, self-believe and massively superior firepower. They are much more likely to shove it somewhere in mainland America, Europe or Asia. [Note to self - wonder about winner in goa'uld 'regiment' vs. army of early Tudor period English longbowmen]
