| WAR OF THE WORLDS NEWS A small production house called Pendragon Pictures is attempting to take advantage of modern film technology and remake the movie classic. According to a press release issued by Pendragon, the release date for the film has been bumped up from summer of 2003 to Halloween, 2002. Director Tim Hines commented, "As the details of our production became more refined, we realized we had it within our grasp to release by Halloween, which I really want to do as Halloween is the night Orson Welles broadcast his famous radio version of War of the Worlds. I feel the approach to our production has a great deal in common with the approach Orson Welles took with the material, and we will make history on Halloween night, 2002." Filming is scheduled to begin this fall, but no major studio or distributor has been connected with the project as yet. Director Hines has little on his résumé other than some dubious independent film credits (House of the Rising, Starship Orpheus). Pendragon Pictures has a website with some additional details on the shoot. Principle photography should last 18 weeks, with large-scale miniature photography to follow for an additional 12 weeks. The majority of the effects work will be carried out by Foundation Imaging - famous for their work on the various Star Trek series - with some of the lighter effects tasks handled in-house by Magic Dragon Special Effects. Newcomer Katie Tomlinson has been signed on for a lead role in the film. Her previous acting experience consists mainly of a recent part in The Fugitive television series. There's also some interesting production artwork on the site - the two examples at right are sketches of a Martian and one of the aliens' fighting machines. The project appears to be a go from start to finish even if additional funding and distribution are not procured. The question is, will the film make a wide release in 2002? And if so, can a rookie director and a little-known production house make a splash with it? We'll keep our eyes on this one to see what develops. |

| I hope they make it good. However i have seen good small studio scrits ruined by stupid Sex scenes. Anyhow if they stick to human reaction they have a leg up on many Sci Fi pics. I don't want to see a CGI plotless movie yer AGAIN. ZachWZ |
