Driving Music

I mentioned on another thread how Raspberry Swirl by Tori Amos made for good driving music - but are there any tracks people here consider as definite driving music - the mere mention of the words "driving" and "music" make you think of them?

I can call two tracks for that honour immediately - "Riders on the Storm" and "LA Woman" by the Doors are such driving music - especially for driving at night. and not in hectic traffic.

Any other suggestions?

I'd go with stuff like Cluster One by Pink Floyd and Are You There by Anathema, but up there with the greatest driving tunes of all time would have to be Crocket's Theme by Jan Hammer.

In my car on rotation is a CD my mate in Manchester (a fellow old skool hiphopper) put together for me, which includes a 20 minute mix by Jazzy Jeff of Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeff fame, recorded from a german radio station, and the scrathing and mixing that Jeff Town throws down is truly stunning, and includes such tracks as Girls Of The World Ain't Nothing But Trouble, Parent Just Don't Understand, Summertime, and many many more. Following that mix there are lots of EPMD tracks which are truly stunning inc:

The Who is very good driving music. I like to, alternatively, listen to stuff I know by heart so I can sing out very loud, there is nobody listening to cringe after all , or stuff that is soothing/relaxing/energizing that has few or no lyrics. So I'll listen to Journey, Bach, Ozzy Osborne, anything 80's, Eminem, Dirty Vegas and the like. I wore out my cassette of the best of The Who and haven't had a chance to replace it with a CD. I'd love to listen to Boris the Spider while driving through traffic .

The Doors' Morrison Hotel CD is probably my favorite driving music. But the LA Woman CD is very good, as well. Then again, I've been a Doors fan ever since I first heard them, when I was about 12 years old. Amazing that Morrison has been gone so long and his (and his bandmates') music is still more contemporary sounding than a lot of the stuff coming out today.

Other driving music, for me, is Journey's Greatest Hits CD. Also, Eagles' Hotel California and Gordon Lightfoot's Summertime Dream.

Yeah, I know, quite a wide variety.

I have a 47 minute drive to work everyday. In the morning I always listen to NPR. On the way home, after teaching, I have to listen to something that moves, either with a good beat or a great vocal line that makes me roll down the window and go "Ahhhhh!" (Mostly as a sigh, but there are days when it's a scream.) So back to music. I frequently flip between Classic Rock stations. I heard "Freebird" the other day and it made me so happy for no reason at all. I also like to hear "Killer Queen" by Queen, and "When the lights go out" (real title?) by Journey. Lately I've been listening to Aerosmith, Nine Lives, with the windows rolled down finally!
