Have resurrected this thread, as I've just realised that I've read 4 of Freda's books - the first 4 of her 'Blackbird' series. I got them when they were first launched back in the late 1980s - they were excellent. According to her website, they are currently being re-released by Immanion Press, who also publish Storm Constantine.
Her Jewelfire Trilogy is currently in my 'to be read' pile. I'm a little embarrassed by this, as I bought them and got her to sign them for me while I was at Worldcon last year. They would certainly fit into the 'epic' category, as they are fairly weighty tomes. If the style is even close to being as readable as her Blackbird series, then I'm sure I will enjoy them as well.
I didn't realise that Freda had been quite as prolific as she has. With 17 titles to her name, she is clearly no slouch. I'm sure that Brian will get on well with her - she's a true Goth! Here's a link to her website and you can check out her impressive list of titles:
