from http://www.screenit.com/movies/2000/...&_dragons.html

In a mystical place of a time unknown, there's turmoil in the Empire of Izmer. The young Empress, Savina (THORA BIRCH), wants equality and prosperity for both the magic capable Mages as well as the commoners, but Profion (JEREMY IRONS), an evil and power-hungry mage, wants to overthrow her, but needs the support of a special council to do so.
With just three days before she must relinquish her rule, Savina hopes that Marina (ZOE McLELLAN), a mage apprentice, can use a map to find a legendary magical scepter that can control the land's red dragons and thus prevent Profion from usurping her throne and power. Unfortunately, he's sent his lieutenant, Damodar (BRUCE PAYNE), and his henchman in search of that same scepter, and Marina soon finds herself on the run.

Unwillingly joining her are two common thieves, Ridley (JUSTIN WHALIN) and Snails (MARLON WAYANS), that she previously caught trying to rob the Magic School, as well as the dwarf Elwood (LEE ARENBERG) and Savina's best tracker, Norda (KRISTEN WILSON), an elf. As the ragtag group tries to find the scepter and preserve peace in their land, they must overcome various obstacles, difficulties and repeated run-ins with Damodar and his men while doing so.

If you're not a D&D player, or at least familiar with role playing games, I don't expect you to like this film. It has a bunch of hidden humor that only gamers would understand. If you just want to watch an entertaining fantasy flick, go for it. I liked it myself, even though it could've been better.

Ok, I may upset one or two people with what I'm about to say, please remember this is my own opinion and it's not meant to offend or belittle anyone who liked D&D. Like all reviews you should take into consideration what is said, then see the film and judge for yourself, I mean how many times have I gone to see a movie that's been slated and ended up thinking "What was so bad about that?". Quite a few I can tell you . So here we go...

Before I start let me make one thing clear, I have played D&D, I used to run adventures back at school and me and everybody involved all had a blumming great time playing. I loved that game, but.....

Man I hated the majority of this film, mainly due to Jeremy Irons giving a performance so over the top as to be laughable *shiver*, and his henchman..... well don't even get me started on that one. Ya know it's that kind of hammy acting that continues to give fantasy films a bad name, I mean Irons is an award winning actor for Frell's sake, one of the greats and here he is giving a performance that would make the Tasmanian devil look like the king of cool.

Don't get me wrong the film itself looked very pretty and there were some creatures that actually were from the D&D universe (although they could have made a bit more use of the great looking Beholders). It's just most of the acting and characters sucked, especially the hero's best friend! Watching him you get the distinct impression they wanted Eddie Murphy for this role but just ran out of money due to the cost of the effects. So they got one of the Waynens brothers to fill the role, boy did they miss the mark on that one. He did nothing but annoy me for his entire screen time, infact I don't even know why they had this character in it at all as he was totally uneccessary.

Right gonna stop now as I don't want to give out any spoilers for those that have not seen this movie. As with every point I make please feel free to comment or argue the case for this movie:-).
