Talking I feel so old!

Here's a question for everyone who was a kid when the original films first got released. Now I came into the Star Wars hype a bit late. I was 2 when the first film was released and didn't really get into them until Empire hit theaters. But the weird thing of it is that I'm meeting people who are only a few years younger than I am (I'm 26) who have never seen Star Wars. I mean, not seeing Star Wars is, IMO, kinda like not having ever seen, say, The Brady Bunch. (Assuming one lives in the US.)

Anyone else encountering this? It's beginning to creep me out.

i only just watched the original 3 episodes last month. I think i prob saw "Star Wars" when i was a kid cos it seemed familiar, but the other 2 were definitely first time viewings...
In fact i had watched Phantom Menace before them....

Everyone my age watched 'Star Wars' when it first came out, it was absolutely essential viewing, everyone was talking about it as if cinema had changed forever!

So all my friends have seen it, even those who don't watch any other Science Fiction films and TV. But I am surprised by the number of people who never saw Star Trek, the original series. Especially, since when I was young it seemed to be on BBC TV almost every day of the Summer holidays, and that makes me feel old.

Peachy started a thread over there called 'Growing up with TOS' and there are a lot of similar comments.

I've seen it!

I have encountered this too, but not that often. I actually just met someone the other day who never saw "Phantom". I realize that it hasn't been out as long as the originals, but how could someone not see Phantom? Even if your not a die-hard fan...I just don't get it. Even my Dad wanted to see Phantom. He was there with me and my sisters opening night.

I actually know a lot of people who have seen "Phantom Menace" but have never seen the originals... which I suppose makes more sense than the other way around...

I've see ST:TOS. Not all of them, but most. Used to watch them when I was little, and now I watch them sometimes on BBC2 on Sundays.

i kinda did it this way round, although i had watched "a new hope" about 10 years ago or something, so i watched Phanton Menace from a clean slate. But I've now come to my senses and watched all 4 repeatedly

I was 13 when Star Wars first came out and I hated sci-fi at that time. My (future) brother-in-law was always watching reruns of ST:TOS and I thought they were STUPID!

When I went to see Star Wars it was with someone else, their decision, so I thought I would just grin and bear it. Well from that first scene of the stars and the star destroyer overhead, I was gone, hooked. I was enthralled, amazed, brought to a whole new reality and existence. It would not be an overstatement to say that Star Wars changed and SAVED my life! Literally.

I fantasized about it constantly and desperately wanted a lightsaber. (Still do in fact! :lol It was such a wonderful gift in my life, coming just at the right time.

When the 20th anniversary showings came out I was ecstatic. For years I wanted to see the films in the theater again!

And then I was surprised at all the people I knew who were 5 or 2 or not even born yet when SW came out! I couldn't believe it. Don't know if I felt old or it was just a reality check. Talked to one fellow who was named Luke because his mom was pregnant with him when she saw Star Wars! I thought that was cool....and that time I did feel a bit old!

When I saw Empire during anniv. showings, I was 33. I sat near an 18 yr. old and a 23 yr. old. They each thought I was their age! Talk about an ego boost! Made me feel young instead of old! Too cool!

I saw the first movie when I was 14 years old or so and have been hooked on it ever sense...and since I'm 27 that's quite a while. I have all the movies and watch them frequently...but I can't imagine someone not having seen any of them. Maybe they live in a cave or something. I just recently started reading the books and I'm having lots of fun

Saw the originals on the BIG screen when they were first released (after getting out of the Air Force). Thought the 3rd one went a bit too far to the "kiddie" end with the ewoks, but they managed to keep enough of the originals in it to make it good.

(Even tho Lucas stole almost everything from earlier films - light sabers, storm troope armor designs, helmet design of the guys firing the planet killer, even the attack sequence choreography on the death star cam from a British B&W WW2 movie about taking out a bridge where they had to "skip" the bombs across a river. It's big claim to fame is the new methods of using minatures. Maybe they didn't release them on DVD because of all the "mistakes" you can see on tape which would jump out on DVD?)

With the release of the last episode it's obvious that they're pimping to the real young people with too much cartoon and kiddie type stuff. No character development. Inadequate dialog. Almost a non-existant storyline. He might have grabbed about 1/3 of the size new audience as he did when he released the first ones. But he lost nearly all of his original audience. I'll buy the originals on DVD (if the ever come out) but won't bother going to the theatre or watching anything about the new ones until he remembers how to make movies.

When compared to the originals, this movie would have fit into the first 1/3 of any of them.

Hopefully when Obi Wan heads out to learn the ways of The Force, Lucas will head out to relearn the ways of The Plot. Otherwise, who cares what other episodes he brings out. With so many other producers blowing him away most of us won't.
