I donated my copy of L. Sprague de Camp's biography of Lovecraft to the university library many years ago, but my memory is that De C. found an affinity between ideas of the German author Spengler and Lovecraft's most cherished persuasions. From this piece by T. Bertonneau, that wopuld seem to be correct. Without endorsing opinions expressed there, I thought I would forward the piece as a convenient presentation of these ideas, perhaps worth saving for reference.
Lovecraft read at least one volume (the second, IIRC) of The Decline of the West.
