To me, writing is like music, your inspired by what you hear, and the reality is, no matter how original you think your music is, somebody has likely done something similar already.
As long as your not writing a story the falls into a market that's saturated - like sparkly vampires - I don't think it will be a problem what you write. I don't think what you have said above does. I'm gathering your writing something similar to Percy Jackson and the Olympians? Mythology in present day world?
Write the story you want to write, and rest assured that because it's coming from your head it will have your own unique flavour to it, that separates your story from those of a similar plot.
EDIT: On a quick google search, there is a goodreads list of books similar, but really the only one that stands out to me is the previously mentioned Percy Jackson. I think your topic of choice has good potential to be expanded on, especially if it's not YA. Most of these sort of books appear to be YA. |
I agree, I used to tell my best friend all my plot/story ideas and all he ever said was that it had already been done.
My response was yes! but not like this with this twist and flavour.
I have even gone as far as to create my own orc, elf origin stories and he was like "but you can't do that, elfs are meant to be like this and orcs are meant to be like that".
I would say google what you are trying to come up with and make sure there is a small gap in the market for you.
Other than that have confidence in your own world and voice.
Not that I've had any success, well, at least not commercially lol.
