The geographical relationship between Ghiscar (Old Ghiscar, Astapor, Meereen) and what's left of Valyria is clearly shown on the map, "The Lands of the Summer Sea", in
A Storm of Swords, so no speculation was needed in the production of this part of the new map.
(But she was travelling north, as least when passing (through) Ghiscar, as she was following the coast, whether aboard ship or on land.)
