Part three!

Here you go guys, part three. Hope you like it.

SG1 traveled single file down the narrow path toward the ruins, each immersed in their own thoughts. Where had the inhabitants gone? Why had they left in the first place? Why had no one else settled here? If the planet was as rich in naquada as sensors had indicated, then why hadn't the Go'auld found this world? With so many unanswered questions, they couldn't help but glance around warily, wonderingly, as they made their way toward the structures that might hold those answers.

They had been walking for close to twenty minutes and were almost half way to the ruins. The atmosphere was very pleasant to the senses, all the different colors, and scents, the tinkle and chime they heard from some of the most exotic of the flowers, the soft, silky texture of the petals that brushed their hands as they walked along. It would have been a relaxing journey, but for the underlying sense of desertion they all felt. They had seen no signs of life. There were no birds singing in the trees. No bees or butterflies were working the flowers. As the team neared their destination, they began to quicken their pace, all of them wanting to get the mission started. The sooner they began, the sooner they would finish and could go home.

"Daniel, get your camera ready. When we reach the ruins, you start taking video of them. When you've finished filming it all, then, if we have time, you can start translating on site." Jack started issuing orders, trying to motivate his team to get to work and get it done fast. He had a bad feeling about this place. "Teal'c, check the perimeter, make sure there are no nasty surprises waiting to spring." Teal'c nodded and turned off to circle the ruins, searching for anything that seemed out of the ordinary. "Carter, you been getting any readings on that thing yet?" He gestured toward the scanner Sam held in her hands. It was making soft beeping noises and, every once in a while, it would emit a high pitched whine as it tried to get a fixed position on where the naquada signal was originating from.

"Yes, Sir. It's working perfectly." Satisfaction colored Sam's voice as she made a slow circle to allow the scanner to get a lock on the correct coordinates. "I've managed to get readings on at least seven different sites where we should find significant deposits of naquada. The closest one seems to be only 50 or so yards past the ruins. I'll need to follow each signal and mark where it is located, so the follow up teams will know exactly where to start digging. Once I have all seven of these marked, I should be able to block them out of the scanner, and see if I can locate any others."

Jack nodded at Sam and reached for his radio. "Teal'c, you finding anything?"

"Negative, O'Neill. I have as yet not noticed anything from which any danger might be forthcoming." Teal'c's deep voice carried strongly through the clearing, even though he was out of sight on the far side of the ruins. "I will continue with my search."

"Yeah, ok, that works. Carter and I are going to start marking these naquada deposits she's been locating, and Daniel's going to stay here and keep filming. O'Neill out." Jack turned around to talk to Daniel, only to see no sign of him anywhere among the ruins. Jack sighed, propped his crossed forearms on the weapon strapped to the front of his vest, and yelled sharply, "DANIEL!"

Up popped Daniel, sans hat, from behind a low stone wall twenty feet to the right of where Jack and Sam stood. He had a pencil in one hand and a sketchpad in the other, and an excited grin stretching from ear to ear. Dust already coated his hands and was dotted over his jacket and T-shirt. He also had a streak of dust smeared across one cheekbone from where he had pushed his glasses up. In short, he already looked like he was having the time of his life, and they hadn't even been at the ruins for a full half-hour yet.

"Jack, you've got to take a look at this," Daniel said as he dropped back down behind the wall again.

Sam sent Jack a sympathetic glance, "I'll just head over to this closest deposit and start marking its dimensions." She waited till she had her back to the colonel before giving in to the grin she had been holding back, Daniel always drove Jack crazy on missions like this one.

Jack stormed after Daniel, who was sitting cross-legged in the dirt making a sketch of the picture on the wall in front of him. "What did I tell you Daniel? I told you to film all the ruins first, before you started trying to translate it. We don't have that much time here, and you're not going to get enough film to work on back on base if you don't get busy." But is was apparent that Daniel was paying him no attention what so ever.

"Look at this." Daniel was pointing his pencil at a crude set of pictures carved on the wall. "The writing on the ruins seem to be some form of Greek that I haven't encountered yet, though it shouldn't take me very long to figure it out. But Jack, these drawings here.....these are different. It's almost as if children made them. I've seen them scattered periodically over all the surfaces....." He cut off abruptly as Jack leaned over and plucked the pencil from his one hand and the sketch book from his other.

Jack glanced around and spotted the digital camera lying on its bag at Daniel's side. He picked it up and handed it to Daniel. "So, they let their kids color on the walls, big deal. Finish filming, now. You can figure it out back on base." Jack walked away, he needed to catch up to Carter and get the marking done so they could head home.

"But Jack, I think this might be significant," Daniel called after him anxious to finish his explanation, but Jack just kept on walking. Daniel looked down at the camera in his hand and went back to filming, but his attention stayed on the childish carvings. He had a feeling that they were the most important piece of the puzzle of what had happened to the inhabitants of this world.

I'm getting close to being finished with part 4, it's kinda hard right now tho. With the Mummy Returns coming out this weekend, I've gotten a bit sidetracked. Tho, it seems to be inspiring me, so after I finish Child's Play, I might have another on the way for you guys

I should have part 4 up sometime tomorrow (friday here) so don't get too rabid, wouldn't want to have to put any of you in the hospital for shots. LOL

Thanks for all the nice comments BTW. I'm getting a big kick out of your reactions to the story, it's very gratifying :rolly2:

PART FOUR

Here you go, part four. Got part 5 in the works already, so won't be too long till that. ENJOY

Teal'c finished his intense examination of the perimeter. He had exteded his search several hundred yards out from the structures, and had found no trace of any dangers or pitfalls of any kind. As he journeyed back to report his findings to O'Neill, Teal'c was quite confident that his team was in no danger from any physical threat. However, it was that very lack of a threat that made him uneasy. A planet this peaceful and beautiful should have many inhabitants, but this one did not. Why? Teal'c pondered that question as he headed back to the ruins. He would help his friends complete thier tasks, so that they could return home. And he would continue to keep careful watch until they were all safely off the planet.

As Teal'c neared the ruins, he found that O'Neill and Major Carter had almost completed marking the initial seven deposits that Major Carter had discovered.

"I have finished my search of the perimeter, O'Neill. And have found nothing of significance that might offer us a threat. However, I do advise that we finish our mission quickly and return through the Stargate. I feel, uneasy, in this place."

"Yeah, I know what you mean." Jack glanced around the clearing. Everything looked peaceful enough, but he felt uneasy as well. "This place looks beautiful, but the emptiness is starting to give me the creeps." Sam made a quiet sound of agreement. "Carter has found another three deposits of naquada. We'll finish marking them and, providing Daniel has managed to finish filming, we'll get the heck outta Dodge." Jack knelt down and hammered a metal marking stake into the ground. "Why don't you go check on Daniel, see how far he's been able to get with the filming."

Teal'c nodded, "Very well." He turned and, seeing Daniel among the ruins, began walking toward him. When he was close enough for Daniel to hear him, he called out, "Daniel Jackson, do you require any assistance?"

"Oh, hey Teal'c. Actually, I'm just about finished. I only have these few monoliths to go." He gestured toward four remaining stone pillars, each approximately 8 feet tall, by 4 feet wide and 1 foot deep. All of them had various writings and pictures carved over both the front and back surfaces. "I would have been done eariler, but I keep getting sidetracked by these drawings. I think they might really help me figure out what happened here. As you can see here," Daniel walked to the other side of the ruins and pointed to what seemed to be the first of the pillars erected. "There are no drawings on this monolith at all, on either side. Then, about a quarter of the way around the circle, the drawings start appearing." He started walking back along the semicircle of stones toward Teal'c again. He pointed to another pillar, "Here. On the next few stones, they only appear sporadically, but then the number of them begins to increase until, finally, they take over almost completely." He finished walking along the line of pillars until he reached the low stone wall where Jack had found him eariler. "And here, this wall is almost entirely covered with the drawings. There are very few words scattered over the surface, and what are here seem to be disjointed and jumbled. It's very confusing. I don't think it will take me long to translate the words, but these images will take some time."

"Perhaps I could finish the filming for you so you can concentrate on the translation. I have a feeling that we will need to know exactly what happened to the inhabitants that were on this planet." Teal'c held out his hand for the camera.

"You sure, Teal'c?" Daniel asked. Teal'c nodded. "OK, that would be a big help, thanks."

When Daniel handed the camera over to him, Teal'c studied it intently. "Major Carter has shown me how to use this devise, it is not difficult. Where should I begin?"

"We only have these last pillars here, fron and back, and then we're done." Daniel pointed to the last four stone slabs. "I really appreciate your help." He walked back over to where he had set his backpack down next to the first pillar, knelt down and retrieved his extra sketchpad and a pencil. Jack still had his other ones. He looked up at the writings and began working on the translation.

Teal'c turned to the monolith, flipped out the LED screen on the side of the camera and began to film.

Cool

Ah Kat, they are a truly impatient mob, ain't they?

But they mean well and I couldn't write without them.

So is the next part done yet? I'm enjoying this.

I post between lines of my own fic. The only way I can do both. Post and Fic
