The thing in the basement
Dreary British 1990s arts council funded effort. Seth Bludgeon is a steelworker who has just been laid off, and decides to take up racing pigeons and make his fortune in the lucrative world of avian betting. He rashly takes a massive wager in the pub against the local pigeon supremo Len Taint. The bulk of the film is a strange mix of social commmentary, slapstick and DIY, portraying Seth's struggle to build a pigeon loft, hampered by his having mislaid an unnamed tool in his cellar; comic relief provided by his harridan of a wife shrieking about the state of their children's teeth. Notable for a standout performance by the pigeon Dave 'Pecky' Montenari as the runt of the brood turned champion.
