Re: Alien Resurrection (1997)

I saw part of Resurrection on AMC yesterday.

I don't know if this has been discussed before, but in the underwater swim chase scene, when an alien is blown up, I think its blood would change the pH of the water very quickly, so the humans' eyes would start burning and so forth. I wouldn't want to swim in that water.

Very good point. I don't recall the movies after Aliens (Alien 2) all that well, as I saw them only once, which was too many times. Since we don't know the chemistry of the alien blood, it would be hard to say what reaction might result (as water can be an acid or a base). Let's just say that chumming the water with one of those bugs would be even worse than a stealth "peer" in the pool.

Since I don't remember the scene, I don't know the magnitude of the "explosion," which would be of more immediate concern. Underwater demolition crews prefer to very far away before the action starts.

I think the exploding exomorph in this scene was CGI. It got shot with a rifle-fired mini-grenade and blew up in a cloud of dark gray blood.

I didn't mean on the set. The filmmakers certainly wouldn't set off any explosions while people were in the water. It's just that an underwater explosion is much worse than the same explosion in open air. Shooting the alien with a grenade might be a Pyrrhic victory. Water is "Corbomite" for explosions.

But the situation reminds me of an old joke. An older, experienced SCUBA diver is showing a newbie the ropes. They encounter a shark and race for the surface to get away, but the shark is still right behind them. Swimming madly, the newbie cries out, "It's useless! We can't outswim a shark!"

The older diver replies, "I don't need to outswim the shark, I just have to outswim you!"
