i gotta know...

... what's with the wizard of oz adlibs?

is it like RDA's fave pastime or something?

are there ant indigenous lions bears or tigers i should beware of in my sleep (admittedly, season 1)

either the've redone the gateroom, or we're not in kansas anymore

dorothy, i'm home (and the equally heroic teal'c-- i am not dorothy!)

where's that yellow brick road when you need it, huh dorothy (to SAM!!!)

i know i'm classed as mentally insane for recognising them, but the unoriginality of some of RDA's quotes amazes me sumtimes! (however gorgeous he is!!!!)

Enemy Within: That's right Dorothy it was all a dream.

First Commandment: Several - We're off the see the Wizard, "to Oz"; lions and tigers and bears

Politics: And you were there and you were there..

Tok'ra: Where's that yellow brick road when you need it, eh Dorothy

1969: Auntie Em? Auntie Em?

Out of Mind: There's no place like home.

Jollinar's Memories: certainly not emerald city

Phew, I'm tired. Someone else wanna do seasons four and five?

Possibilities:

a) one of script writers (or RDA) really likes Wiz of Oz.
b) one of them is just showing off being able to quote film lines
c) it is a very well known film, so quotes from it should be recognised
d) they do use other films too, including numerous quotes or references from Star Wars, Star Trek etc.
e) it is common practice for in-jokes and cross-media references, so quotes from other "journey" based films/TV (which this pretty much is, theoretically) will be quite topical

Two hours later I have had a chance to finally watch the extras featurette which comes on the Region2 DVD volume 16 (series 4 eps 9-12).

They explicitly talk about this Wizard of Oz thing:

Apparently (exec producer) Jonathon Glassner put a couple of the early quotes in some of the scripts he was working on. RDA liked the idea, and it became a game to see how many they could get in.

[Sort of ties in with some of my previous guesses. Basically an on-set in-joke! Many other films/series are also used.]

honestly - after a while the Wizard of Oz ref's get on my nerves - but i hate the movie anyway -- (long story, deals w/ marching band issues and such) ---

but - SG-1 isn't the only show that does this -

there are a ton of Batman ref's in Angel, and several ref's to Scooby Doo in BTVS

so - it's not really unique to SG-1
