Spike was with Dru at that time, although their relationship basically went down the pan when Angelus came along... he had to knock her out to get her to leave with him.. and the next time we see him, shes dumped him...

Angelus was not just the best Buffy villian, but one of the best villians of all time. All the other Buffy villians had something hummanistic or relatable to them. Not Angelus. He was evil through and through. But not the steriotypical, James Bond villiany, characture type evil. His evil was the type of evil the word was described to mean. He was even evil to the very people who were close to him, i.e. Spike. He was child of pure chaos and destruction. All the other big bads had a master plan they wanted to accomplish by the end of the season. Not Angelus. He just wanted to kill people. Lots of people. Countries of people. It was beautiful in it's simplicity.

[Angelus Rex: He was evil through and through. But not the steriotypical, James Bond villiany, characture type evil.] I agree, but I say it slightly differently. I prefer the villian that whispers in your ear over the screaming maniac. Angelus is that kind of intimate evil that gets under your skin - literally. [Angelus Rex: He was even evil to the very people who were close to him, i.e. Spike.] For example: "She's stronger than any Slayer you've ever faced. Force won't get it done. You gotta work from the inside. To kill this girl... you have to love her." GILES: "Around Valentine's Day, he, he, he's rather prone to, uh... well, um, brutal displays of, uh... He would think of it as affection, I suppose."
