| Cinescape's latest Andromeda offering: One of the biggest syndicated hits this fall was the new science fiction series Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda. Obviously, having the creator of Star Trek in the title of your show is going to help win over sci-fi-minded TV viewers. But another name also helped lend the fledgling series plenty of Nielsen muscle: Kevin "Hercules" Sorbo. The TV star recently chatted with Cinescape's Chandra Palermo about the transition from Hercules-style fantasy to Gene Roddenberry-style science fiction. "It's a far more complex character to play than Hercules," Sorbo said of his Andromeda character, starship commander Dylan Hunt. "I mean, Hercules was a comic book. It was a blast to do it, but from an actor's standpoint, it was time to move on and do something different. And I like that [Hunt] brings such a wealth of emotions. Here's a guy who's been in suspended animation for 303 years. He's gonna wake up with a lot of issues. Everything that he once knew is gone. And this guy bleeds, he gets hurt, he makes mistakes, he has to learn from his mistakes. So it's not quite the same ballgame that it was with Hercules. He's human, and I think people will be able to identify with him more easily." Another element that drew Sorbo to Andromeda was the show's ensemble cast. In Hercules, Sorbo was the focal point of almost every episode. Andromeda offered the actor a more egalitarian atmosphere. "We're gonna pretty much spread the wealth of the storylines among seven different actors," Sorbo says. "It was important to me to have a little bit more of a life. I paid my dues with Herc." There is more apparently in the Jan/Feb Issue now on sale with Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal on the front cover. |
